ESPN's Pat Yasinskas agrees that Jonathan Stewart is more likely to become trade bait than DeAngelo Williams if the Panthers sign free agent Mike Tolbert.
This possibility was first floated by the Charlotte Observer, and Yasinskas is a trusted voice as a former Panthers beat reporter. Stewart is entering a contract year, and the Panthers probably won't be able to retain both him and the overpaid Williams behind 2012. If the Panthers do shop Stewart before April's draft, they shouldn't settle for any less than a second-round pick.

I think I'd offer a third for Stewart. He'd have pro-bowl potential for the next several years and I don't see a likelihood of finding a better talent in the third than him.

you dont trade any picks away for someone entering a contract year....unless he does an extension with it and thats the last thing MM is worrying about right now. Not to mention it says anything LESS than a 2nd round pick. Too rich for my blood. Your 3rd rd pick scenerio wouldnt be horrible...but it seems like him and Deangelo have been there forever lol. With all the picks weve wasted on RBs i probably wouldnt spend anymore than a 4th on another rb whether itd be draft or trade. Probably not getting Stewart for a 4th.
