I'll take Mel Gray

over Hester, but I'm biased

I loved Mel Gray....I can still close my eyes and see that punt return in an icy Lambeau Field to win the game in '91......but in NO way is he even close to Hester. NONE.

The Numbers

Gray
Punt Returns
252 for 2753 yds and 3 TD - 10.9 avg

KR
431 for 10250 and 6 TD - 24.3 avg

Hester
Punt Returns
193 for 2502 and 12 TD - 13.0 avg

Kick Returns
131 for 3156 and 5 TD - 24.1 avg

The key stat to me....Hester has 324 returns and 17 scores....one every 19.0 returns. Gray 673 returns and 9 scores....one every 74.7 returns.

Game. Set. Match.

(you're still my boy though Mel)

I wonder if Deion was strictly a return man/3 option at wr if he would have been that much better. Not discrediting Hester in the least bit or suggesting Deion would have been, just an actual wonder.

Hester without even blinking an eye...simply the best ever.

but heads up...the kid in Arizona ( Peterson ) is having a nice start.

He definitely is. Whats interesting is how different of a returner Peterson and hester are. Peterson is a big sprinting freight train returner who hits a seam n chucks a duece while Hester is more of a small shifty, set you up to fall down returner.

Kind of like taking Alan Trammell over Derek Jeter...

Trammel was a bitch. No invoking either Trammel or Whitaker for that matter

Hester without question. The punts that go out of bounds after 25-30 yards because they don't want to kick to him don't show up in his stats. Teams kicking to the upman so they get the ball at the 35-40 yard line instead of kicking it to hester don't show up in his stats.

Yeah, Hester is the best ever. He is shifty and fast enough, but he's not a rocket out there, what he does better than anyone ever is set his blocks up and see the field as soon as he catches the ball. Honestly he doesn't even look like a burner out there.

Deion is the only one I might take, he was a lot faster and just as shifty and he gave you the best cover corner in NFL history.

I think the criteria was for a return man alone...hell I'd takeDesean Jackson over Hester if I get the total package.

btw not that 40 time ALWAYS translates to onfield speed but hester has recorded a 4.27 40 yard time, so he is a burner. I think he just jogs it out and glides a lot to set up blocks.

Hester's great, but Peterson - who I was hoping the Lions would have taken - is coming on as a CB too. He makes some stupid mistakes, but hey, the kids still learning. And he can run back punts second only to Hester....so far.
