Might be closer to happening....and it should.
DETROIT -- It may mean nothing. Then again, it could be a sign of things to come.
For the first time in his professional career, Detroit Tigers infield prospect Dixon Machado was instructed Sunday to start a game at third base in Triple-A Toledo.
Which begs the question: Why?
It may mean nothing. But with the exception of two games in which Machado started at second base, the 23-year-old has been used exclusively at shortstop throughout his seven-year career in Detroit's minor league system.
His first professional start at third base comes on the same day that Tigers third baseman Nick Castellanos was held out of the starting lineup for a second straight day.
And based on comments manager Brad Ausmus made after Detroit's 12-4 blowout win Sunday, it's possible Castellanos could be held out for a third straight game.
Romine made his second straight start at third, and responded by going 2 for 3 with his first home run this season. After the game, Ausmus suggested that Romine could be back in the Tigers' starting lineup for a third straight day.
"(Romine) did a nice job," Ausmus told FOX Sports Detroit. "He'll probably be in the lineup tomorrow, quite frankly."
Are the Tigers considering the optioning Castellanos to Triple-A Toledo in the near future? And if so, is Machado currently being groomed to fill his void at third base?
Or is something even bigger on the verge of happening? Are the Tigers testing Machado out at third base in an effort to showcase him for a potential trade?
Again, it may mean nothing. But it's certainly worth keeping an eye on.
