Lions head coach Dan Campbell is known for his aggressive style. Sometimes, even he needs some convincing to attempts bold moves. Look no further than Thursday’s big win over the Green Bay Packers.
With just 43 seconds left and the game tied 31-31, the Lions were facing a 4th and 1 from the Green Bay 21. They could have elected to go for a field goal right there and give the Packers the ball with about 35 seconds left, needing a field goal to tie. Instead, the Lions elected to go for it on fourth down, risking giving the Packers the ball with a tie game.
The Lions converted for the first down, ran the clock down and Jake Bates drilled a 35-yard game-winning field goal to win the game and move Detroit to 12-1 and a franchise-record 11th straight victory.
As it turned out, it was Lions quarterback Jared Goff who pushed Campbell to attempt the big fourth-down conversion.
Former All-Pro cornerback Richard Sherman discussed the conversation between Goff and Campbell on his podcast. Sherman said he was talking to former All-Pro offensive tackle Andrew Whitworth and mentioned Goff went over to the sideline and heard Campbell on the headset saying they were going to kick the field goal. Goff really wanted to go for the first down. Campbell then asked if Goff wanted to go for it and ultimately decided to roll the dice. The gamble paid off and the Packers never got the ball back.
Trust between a head coach and his quarterback makes all the difference. Look at Nick Foles and Doug Pederson in the Super Bowl. “Philly Special” is now one of the greatest plays in Super Bowl history. Goff and Campbell have each other’s backs and it may very well carry them to New Orleans and Super Bowl LIX.
