Could be had pretty cheap. Just in case peralta is moved, the tigers could sign johnson and move infante to SS. He'd also would be an upgrade over ramon santiago if he takes a bench role.

Why on earth would the Tigers trade for Kelly Johnson?

He plays 2b and lf, and hits better than santiago and anyone else currently on the bench. Sounds like a few needs to me.

Last 3 years away

Johnson .236 BAVG .319 OBP .389 SLG .708 OPS

For a 2B, those numbers are not bad, but not great. They would suck for a LFer.

This isnt a debate about if he is good (which he is clearly not, or he'd be on a team y now) This is a debate in which would he be good for the Tigers bench, which I think he is a superior option spell infante and peralta every once in a while.

Johnson plays 2B and LF (not since 2005). How does he qualify to back up SS or 3B?

When Peralta sits, move infante to ss.
When Infante sits, play johnson at 2b.
When Cabrera sits, im sure he could play better 3b defense than Cabrera...

Keep dreaming.....or smoking.....or whatever you do.

Cmon man, The Tigers have Ramon under one more contract year, they won't get rid of him w/o adding a bench player who is significantly better and perhaps also is more versatile on the IF. Johnson is not a very significant upgrade over Santiago, and he plays only one position. If Infante was to be injured and go on the DL for the rest of the season, then maybe the Tigers could try to acquire him, if he is still available by then, and if he is not the starting 2B with another team.
