Detroit graded out with a week-best 102.1 in the New York Life Protection Index after a 27-20 win at Tampa Bay for its fifth straight regular season victory. The NYLPI is a proprietary formula created by STATS LLC which measures pass protection by using metrics such as length of passes, penalties by offensive linemen, sacks allowed and quarterback hurries and knockdowns.

Nice job OL! I tend to knock them more than I should..but its good to see them actually do their job for an entire game (minus the 2 dumb penalties). Now the challenge will be to keep up a similar effort for the entire season

Gerald McCoy seems to think the reason the Lions OL played so well last week was that they were cheating.

The one thing I can say is how those guards were sitting," McCoy said. "As deep as they were sitting, I don't think that was legal. I really don't. We said something to the refs. They just let it go. But we said, 'Hey, we have to play with the conditions we are in and keep playing.'

Pretty Lame excuse IMO

The comments in the article about McCoy say that the TB writers are calling him a bust. I'll say it definately doesn't look good when you got pwned like a bitch(he actually showed flashes of getting into the backfield on a couple run plays), and then can't even take it like a man.

How many offsides did he have? 2 or 3?

As hard as the Refs pay attention to catch penalties on the line, that McCoy stuff sounds like a bunch of weaksauce.

...then the uneducated call for Backus's head and spout off that lions offensive line is terrible.

Little do people know that the Lions OL was outstanding in pass-protection last year. They should be just as good or better this year. It's the run-blocking we have to worry about.

I think we only gave up something like 27 sacks last season, which was near the top in the league. Unfortunate one with Peppers on Stafford. I don't think we'll have much of a running game until Raiola is gone.

The line did look pretty darn good in the game. I'd still love to see us upgrade there since I think Peterman, Goz and Dom are all mildly retarded.

give it a few weeks and we'll hover around 8th in pass protection

I got Top 5 in sacks allowed. 6th last season. 2nd year with the same 5 starters. Continuity is a very underrated aspect of pass protection. A starting QB gets rid of the ball quicker and has better pocket awareness than a backup.

Looked at those PFF Stats and it looks like Backus and Sims were among the top when it came to running the ball. One of the announcers even pointed out that Best was getting a lot of yards running behind Sims. So our left side is looking pretty good in the run game? :-/

Go tell tom brady and his 500+ yards and 2 all pros along the line that were #1

Sims tore up Miller driving him off the line, but as we got closer to the endzone they put in Price and he absolutly dominated Sims. Price is coming off a crazy injury and I am glad we played him early cause when that guy gets 100% he is going to be a beast.

Not takoing anything away from the Lions because I think they played well and I'm rooting for them to be a good football team, but this formula sounds kind of dumb to me.

"measures pass protection by using metrics such as length of passes, penalties by offensive linemen, sacks allowed and quarterback hurries and knockdowns."

Length of passes- does this include slants that go 60 yards?
Penalties by Oline- Justified
Sacks, hurries, knockdowns- QB's that get the ball out quickly, bootlegs, or qbs that hold onto the ball way too long could all have a positive/negative effect on this.

Like I said, this is not a knock on Detroits Oline, just questioning the method of the study. I'd rather just take an analysts word than use something like this I think.

I would think length of pass is just from qb to wr, basically takes a pass play and subtract yac, which will give you an idea of how long they were asked to block.

I would think the length of the pass is somewhat irrelevant when grading o-lines. I'd like some kind of stat like total seconds protected. that would be fun to know. then divide that by drop backs and find average seconds protected, which would give you a gauge on how quick the qb is getting the ball off. fun stuff like that.
