Looks Like Many Teams Could Be Big Spenders

Didn't know about this rule. It could lead to some massively front-loaded contracts.

I thought there was also a rule about how much actual money (not cap) you can spend in a season? Maybe it was just a minimum? Don't really remember.

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/7570116/nfl-plenty-cap-room-improve

One of the new parts of the NFL collective bargaining agreement is the ability of teams to roll over remaining cap room into the next season. The 2011 season finished with $320 million of remaining cap room. Thirty teams carried over $301.78 million of unused cap money to give the 32 teams approximately $711 million of combined room as they start to prepare for the 2012 season.

The Houston Texans and San Diego Chargers didn't have enough remaining room to push money over into 2012, so Houston has $3.3 million of cap space and San Diego has $9.2 million.

The Jacksonville Jaguars didn't spend $31 million of cap room in 2011, so they now have $45 million of room. The Kansas City Chiefs have $62.995 million after budgeting $24.014 million from the 2011 season. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, thanks to $23.519 million of carryover cap money, have the second-most cap space with $60.496 million. The Cincinnati Bengals moved over $15 million from last year and have $60 million to spend. Dan Snyder of the Washington Redskins has plenty of room to get quarterback and receiver help, thanks to $47.56 million of cap space. The 2011 playoff teams in good shape are the Denver Broncos ($50.735 million of cap room), San Francisco 49ers ($39.33 million), Atlanta Falcons ($30.6 million) and New England Patriots ($20 million). To get to the $50 million mark, the Broncos carried over $26 million of unused cap.

no floor until 2013....agreement just states all 32 teams must spend 3.8 billion in salaries and bonuses in 2011 and 2012.

floor is 89% of the cap # in 2013.

K.

This extra money could pose a problem for the Lions. I thought there wouldn't be enough buyers for all the FAs, but maybe there will be.

So where does this put us now on being able to resign our own guys? How much did we carry over?

Pretty close to nothing.

They all say that. He's like DD, no big moves then bam, Prince Fielder.

lol, no cap in baseball, mitch. we're doing zilch in terms of big names.

Lol. NFL is a history of capped teams making room for current season. There is so much you can do. But Mayhew doesn't seem like a big spender anyway. So we'll see.

no they don't...lol

the Chargers rolled over 23 million for this year and are telling everyone they're gonna be aggressive and spend....Rams , Bills and Titans also have a ton of cap and are showing their hand early by just kicking the tires on Routt.

My biggest worry is that someone offers Tulloch a huge deal.

They better get him signed before FA starts.

Tulloch is a MLB that fits a specific defensive system which is why limited teams were interested in him last year and why we got him for the price that we got him at for the year. I would assume that we will have him locked up long term before FA starts anyway though.

All it takes is one team where he fits that also has money, OR a team that THINKS he might fit and has money. When NFL teams get cap space, they are known to do dumb things. It only takes one team. He better be signed before FA starts.
