Lions released Rocky McIntosh today to make room for DeJon Gomes.

Meh, they just picked him up to neutralize AP week 1.

The Detroit Lions claimed safety DeJon Gomes off waivers from the Washington Redskins, one day after releasing 21 players to get down to the league mandated 53-man roster.

The move was first reported by the Baltimore Sun's Aaron Wilson.

Gomes, a fifth-round pick for Washington in 2011, appeared in 30 games for the franchise, starting eight. The 5-foot-11, 201-pound safety tallied 75 tackles and six pass breakups over those two campaigns.

His most notable NFL moment came during his rookie season when he delivered a low hit on Adrian Peterson, tearing the Minnesota Vikings running back's ACL.

Gomes split his collegiate career between City College of San Francisco and the University of Nebraska. In two seasons with the Cornhuskers, he played in 27 games. He started all 14 contests as a senior, recording 99 tackles and seven pass breakups.

The Lions will need to make a corresponding release to created room for Gomes on the roster. The team will create an additional roster space on Tuesday, when running back Montell Owens can be officially placed on injured reserve with a designation to return.
