Media coverage of the Sochi olympics

The U.S. and European media outlets are having a field day reporting about the insanely poor planning and execution of the Russians preparation of the games, which, while it's fun to point and laugh, is also great because it makes you forget about how screwed up our own country is by comparison.

Your computers might - no, WILL - be hacked in Sochi?

Wow! That's terrible!!!! our own government would never do that to our online communications or devices!

You can't drink the water there (see item #13)?

Ha. It's inconceivable anything like that could ever happen in the U.S. right now! Our environmental regulations are so strict, corporations in this country are barely staying solvent, and often going bankrupt(!)... profits? what profits? Damn tree huggers! Am I right?

It's obviously just western propaganda trying to make Russia and Putin look bad.

Now, on a serious note, I'm still a bit surprised that a place like Sochi managed to get the winter olympics, where it's, on average, 50 degrees in February (including 55 forecast for all of next week).

I saw Condi Rice speak a year ago on the BRIC nations -- Brazil, Russia, India, China

Her take on Russia was that the country was a complete mess, rife with corruption and mafia control and completely incapable of doing anything on a global scale anymore. If it werent for Russia's natural resources there would be no wealth there and the people are highly addicted to alcohol and tobacco. You'd have to think the IOC wont be awarding anything too soon in the future to Russia.

Maybe the tainted drinking water makes a good mixer with Vodka?

The Sochi Martini...urinevited for a toast?

За твоё здоровье! To your good health!

there was a story about an access road built for these Olympics that could've been paved with caviar for the amount they paid for it. Another article quoted some Russian official as saying some heads would roll after the olympics were over; there would be a few show trials that would presumably target contractors there that got a little too greedy, or failed to grease enough palms (it would suck to be the last guy on Putin's christmas card list).

I've had a few discussions with my wife about this... looking at the Wall Street Bailout, the Iraq & Afghanistan conflicts, the way government "subsidies" are doled out, and the way a lot of U.S. government officials escape any sort of accountability... you can't deny the U.S. is corrupt as well. But the corruption doesn't pervade every level of society, at least. Not everyone is on the take, and justice is usually served; you have to be pretty damn loaded to get away with murder here.

And the U.S. media, for all it's faults, is at least somewhat objective; you can't simply buy positive coverage (unless you're the military/intelligence agencies). There will be a record out there of your past crimes, whether you serve time or not.

also... there's a reason dashboard cameras are so prevalent in Russia (and Ukraine as well from what I saw)... the police can be bought for next to nothing, and the roads can be pretty lawless. Your only defense is what you can film.

still... we hold ourselves to a higher standard. no reason to ignore the insane problems in our own country.

Corruption is widespread and I had a Brazilian Fund Manager in LA tell me the World Cup & Olympics there is funneling money into government contractors and mobsters.

No different than here, just less ...corporate.

I had a customs agent in Argentina tell me once that American Money goes a long way there. We were doing some filming for VW and they confiscated our gear even though our paperwork was impeccable.

I was SO glad Chicago didn't get the 2016 games.

Now poor Bob Costas has pink eye, presumably from some infected surface in his Russian hotel room.

If Ukranian hackers can steal your cc info at the Target in Naperville, they can hack your shit in Sochi

Only semi-related, but have you guys seen people on twitter changing their names to look "Russian" by using whatever cyrillic letters look like the ones they want, resulting in moronic gibberish?

I dont know why, but its really pissing me off. I mean, if people were at least spelling phonetically, that' be ok, but this shit is pissing me off. Can google translate not do names (i dunno, ive not tried)?

If the twits were using random Cyrillic letters, then Google translate nor any other language extension for your browser (Firefox, Chrome..et al.) won't be able to translate gibberish.

i realized later i wasnt super clear with the last part, i was just wondering if it did or not. im pretty sure theyre just looking up the cyrillic alphabet and picking out whatever letters look like the latin ones they want and not bothering to translate like they should, and its pissin me off.

last night we watched that video of the Russian police corps singing Daft Punk's "Get Lucky."

it was obviously done ironically, and was hilarious to watch some of the older members of the police corps stand there hating every moment of it.

then they showed some humorless American TV reporter interviewing them afterwards, asking them why they would sing such a song, and if they understood the meaning of the lyrics... the police deserve credit for not choking her with her own microphone cord.

would be great if they went after our own government's flaws with the same zeal.

that is terrible. That would never happen in the America.

our police mans are good. they would never break up a music concert here with violence like that.
