In more "Michigan is not Florida" news, the police chief of Barry Township in western MI resigned. That's welcome to all the sane people of the town, who were upset by the guy's strong-arm tactics, bringing in 30+ unpaid, untrained deputies and armored personnel carriers to police a population of 3,900 that had traditionally been fine with a paid police force of 4.

the Township's insurance coverage was suspended until the chief demonstrated his volunteer deputies were adequately trained in the use of force.

oh, and the chief had also said to the township board, ?I have preached a vision and the Lord put me here for a reason.?

glad to see retarded extremism doesn't fly in Michigan. take it to Florida, buddy, or Arizona.

I've always wondered about that, whether those people were once intelligent and responsible, but became completely stupid, racist, authoritarian-worshipping nutjobs when they approached retirement. I also wondered, would the same thing happen to me someday?

But I don't think so. I think those people were always just stupid, and since all they can do now is sit around home, watching Fox News and waiting to die, their worldview tends to warp itself even more. In most places, they're still a small part of the voting block, but in AZ and FL, they reached critical mass a few decades ago.

Don't rule out fear. There are a lot of fear pushers out there. How far do you transition from unaware and invincible teenager? If you go too far, militarized police might sound like a good idea.

Yes, fear seems to be a powerful factor driving it. The older generations in my family sit there glued to the TV news, imagining a scary world outside, where gangbangers drive around with their headlights off, teenagers play "the knockout game" with impunity, and the only way to survive is to be ready to shoot at a moment's notice.
