Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz said Monday there's a chance safety Louis Delmas could return from minor knee surgery to play Saturday against the San Diego Chargers, but Delmas did not take part in the Lions' first practice of the week today.

Delmas has missed three straight games with a Grade 2 MCL tear in his right knee. He underwent an arthroscopic procedure last week and did not travel with the Lions to Oakland.

Chris Harris, who's started in Delmas' place, also sat out practice after leaving the Raiders game with a concussion, but he went through stretching without a helmet and watched position drills from the field, a sign he's close to returning.

Cornerback Don Carey, long snapper Don Muhlbach, defensive tackle Corey Williams and defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch also sat out practice today, while cornerbacks Aaron Berry and Chris Houston and defensive linemen Nick Fairley and Lawrence Jackson took part in first 30 minutes open to reporters.

Berry (shoulder) and Jackson (thigh) sat out the Lions' 28-27 win over the Oakland Raiders, while Houston (knee) and Fairley (foot) were limited in the game.

update:

On the mend

The secondary appears to be making progress health-wise.
Cornerbacks Chris Houston (knee) and Aaron Berry (shoulder) participated in drills and didn't appear to be in pain.
Houston said he pulled himself out of last weekend's game because he had trouble cutting. But he's optimistic about regaining some mobility this week.
"I don't want to hinder the team and be selfish out there doing something I'm uncomfortable doing," Houston said. "(The knee) is getting better; I'm able to do some things I wasn't able to."
