Don't get me wrong...I feel bad for that guy's wife & kids. But that is where it ends for me. These guys drive around a track going 225+ MPH....they know that there is a good chance that they are not going to live if they crash. It seems between stock car, IRL, Drag racing, etc. that there is a death almost yearly. Can you imagine if there was a yearly death in the NFL or MLB? Those sports would be shut down. I don't get it.

It's actually shocking to me that auto racing doesn't end up with a lot more deaths. It's relatively safe for what they are doing and they amount of crashes at every single race. On a side note, any type of auto racing bores the crap out of me. It provides no entertainment for me whatsoever.

I actually met Dan years ago when my old man was doing some work with Ganassi Motorsports. He was a good guy and pretty damn funny actually. My heart breaks for his family, especially his kids, but he knew full well what he was getting into. All of those guys are more than a little crazy, particularly the open wheel racing guys. I guess one positive would be that it all happened so fast he didn't have time to realize it so at least he didn't suffer greatly but it's still a damned shame.

So this thread made me curious about how many people have died from auto racing so I did some research and ran across the 1955 Le Mans crash. I had never heard anything about this so I went to wikipedia and this is a direct quote from that article:

"Levegh's 300 SLR struck the mound at such speed and angle that it was launched into a somersault, which caused some parts of the car, already damaged and loosened by the collision, to be flung from the vehicle at very great speeds. This included the bonnet and the front axle, both of which separated from the frame and flew through the crowd. The bonnet decapitated tightly jammed spectators like a guillotine."

Talk about some crazy shit.

Try going to the drag races sometime. Its awesome when you are actually there. They literally shake you in the stands when they go by.

You left out the craziest part. 83 spectators died and another 120 were injured. Can you imagine the backlash if something like that happened today?

There's actually a video of it on youtube, tragic shit

I think they need to make a pod with a bubble on it for the drivers much like they did for boat racing. At the speeds they drive inches from one another they really have no protection around their head at all.
