Lions DC Gunther Cunningham believes fifth-round LB Tahir Whitehead is "much better than a fifth-round draft pick."
"He is something," Cunningham said. "That's by far the biggest surprise I've had in quite a while as a coach." Whitehead has been drawing raves all spring, and appears ticketed for more than just special teams as a rookie. A dynamo behind the line at Temple, Whitehead could see meaningful snaps as a nickel rusher.

They needed a dynamic, explosive OLB. Hopefully, they found one here.

The way people sounded on draft day and all the wtf looks, it was the worse pick ever. I'll take their opinion, for now.

Isnt he the player we traded a 4 next year for? I will wait and see what he does on the field in full pads but I hope he can fit the bill of what we have needed.

Yes we traded a whole 12 spots. Plus a 4th next year is not the same as a 4th this this. We get a guy now while they wait a whole year to get a guy. That's why you see it all the time. Not as bad as you make it sound..

I never viewed it as bad as some did. If they feel the player is worth the move then they have to do it. We have to trust the staff they have built a nice team so far and if this kid can play a part in moving to the next level then he is well worth the risk. Good teams find good players in the later rounds maybe we found one.

I thought it was a shitty trade...a 4th this year and a 4th next year can get you alot. We got some dude named tahir.

It wasnt a 4th this year and next. It was a 4th nrxt year for a 5th this year and I think we swapped 7th rd picks.

Basically we gained as many spots by moving then then we did trading a 4th. I know nothing about the player but the trade itself didn't seem too bad.

The trade was poor value for the Vikings. You're supposed to gain an entire round by losing a year. They had the 3rd pick of the 5th round, so unless Detroit has a horrible year, they won't gain one round.

Picks this year are worth more because you get one year to develop/evaluate that player.

Anyways, I don't like reading too much into OTAs, I was merely commenting on the fact that he's supposed to be an explosive LB, which is something I think the Lions need desperately. Hope it works out.
