Red Sox manager John Farrell has been diagnosed with lymphoma and is taking a leave from the team immediately.
He'll begin chemotherapy Tuesday at Massachusetts General Hospital. In an emotional news conference before Friday's game against the Seattle Mariners, Farrell made the announcement, saying he has a "very treatable" form of cancer.
"Your heart just stops," said Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia.
Red Sox bench coach Torey Lovullo will manage the team in Farrell's absence for the rest of the season.
The Red Sox are in last place in the AL East with a 50-64 record.
Farrell guided Boston to the World Series championship in his first season in 2013.
