MYSTIC, CT (MAY 13, 2014) ? A playground dedicated to one of the victims of the Sandy Hook school massacre was vandalized by ?truthers? who claim the shooting never took place.
The playground was put up in honor of seven-year-old Grace McDonnell after the shooting. Last Tuesday, a vinyl sign weighing 50 pounds was stolen from that playground. The sign featured a peace symbol that was based on one of the little girl?s drawing.
Grace?s mom found out about the theft after a man claiming to have stolen the sign called her. Television stations in the area say the alleged sign-stealer told her mom that he took the sign because he believes the school shooting was a hoax. He also told her that her daughter never existed.
20 students and six adult staff members were shot by Adam Lanza at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut in December 2012.
According to published reports, this small group of ?truthers? allege the shooting never occurred or was part of a ?false flag? operation designed to open the door to the confiscation of all guns by the government. The group lists a number of theories about what actually happened but the Huffington Post says most of them can be proven false.
The Grace McDonnell Playground was opened in April and is one of 26 being built across Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey in memory of the victims. A spokeswoman for the foundation responsible for building the playgrounds says a replacement sign has been ordered.
The theft at the playground comes just days after vandals painted graffiti at a playground dedicated to another Newtown victim, Anna Grace Marquez-Greene.
Police are still investigating both incidents.
