If I wasn't lazy, I would pull up the link for this...

It was discussed over a couple paragraphs that although Matt Stafford is looking like he might be a good QB, Alex Smith is indeed the better of the 2 QB's. Yes, the same Alex Smith who has been benched countless times over the last few years. The same Alex Smith who was given that all assuring 1 year deal this last offseason as they went ahead and drafted Colin Kapernick in the 2nd round.

"Stafford missed more throws Monday night than Alex has all season"

So I ask...is he on to something, or just on something? LOL

Alex has played great this year, but it's not even close...Stafford is a better QB.

Stafford does need to improve his accuracy especially early in games. He is way better then Smith though. Stafford has elite qb skills but he still plays like a young QB with getting to amped up. But he seems so relaxed when the game is on the line.

Helps when defenses are trying to stop gore. Teams aren't game planning around best.

Smiths enjoying a resurgence under Harbaugh , but even Harbaugh is rumored to be chomping at the bit to replace him ( they are still after Josh Johnson )...

Stafford >>>>> Smith , not even close.

that statement isn't true. alex smith is 82 for 126 the entire season... pretty sure stafford missed like 7 throws monday .. 19 for 26 or something..

I think they're probably looking at bad throws like over Titus's head by 10 yards, into the ground on a screen etc. rather than I
Incompletes.

But people would have to be crazy to pick Smith over MS. Yeah you Kurt Warner. He ranked Smith 4 and Stafford 5 for this sewsons play.

They need to lay off on the sillyness, Smith is just starting to maybe, perhaps shake the bust tag... Stafford is showing signs of being an elite QB. I can only hope we start out hot and get an early lead to force Smith to make plays, instead of trying to deal with an overdose of Gore all day.

Well let's see what the nerd stats say shall we?

Passer rating: http://espn.go.com/nfl/statistics/player/_/stat/passing/sort/quarterbackRating/year/2011/seasontype/2

Smith is 3rd. Stafford is 6th.

Passer rating is starting to fall off the nerd wagon as it doesn't even correlate as well as completion percentage does to team wins. New nerd stats that take into account situational stats have a much higher correlation such as:

Total QBR: http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/7081061/nfl-week-5-total-qbr-season-leaders

Stafford is 7th. Smith is 16th.

Win Probability and Expected Points Added: http://wp.advancednflstats.com/playerstats.php?pos=QB

Stafford is 5th in WPA and 4th in EPA. Smith is 23rd in WPA and 18th in EPA.

Although it doesn't take a nerd or a genius to know what one of these players is better.

Smith is a Dilfer; could possibly get the jets over the hump with his play so far (if he played with the jets). Actually it looks as though the 49ers are playing the same brand of football that took the jets to the last couple of afc championship games. Fuck Alex Smith.

You switch the roles of smith and Stafford to where the 49ers didn't have a running threat and HAD to pass the ball, then let's see how awesome he looks.

where have you heard that? out here in northern california, all the talk has been about how much harbaugh trusts Alex Smith and how he has made him a better QB. Hell, even some of the fans are starting to come around. He's done a great job managing the game and giving them a passing threat. He's still prone to making a mistake or two during the game, but anyone who watched him last year and this year can see a huge difference.

As i said before though, I'll take stafford over Alex Smith any day.

Harbaugh tried to trade for him during the draft , and there was speculation they'd make another move before this years trade deadline but Tampa refuses to deal him...So the Niners will wait patiantly until he is a FA after this season...Harbaigh LOVES the kid , he has referred to him many times as a "family member"...

CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco expects the 49ers to pursue Bucs backup QB Josh Johnson this offseason.
Johnson, set to hit the open market this winter, played for 49ers' HC Jim Harbaugh at the University of San Diego. Harbaugh called Johnson "the beloved son" during a radio interview last week. A three-year veteran, Johnson has completed 78-of-144 passes for 803 yards, four touchdowns and eight interceptions in parts of 19 career games, adding 197 yards on only 28 carries the ground.
