Stewart called up

DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers added three players on Sunday, including outfield prospect Christin Stewart.

Stewart, 24, a first-round draft pick in 2015, will be the Tigers' everyday left fielder for the final three weeks of the season, manager Ron Gardenhire said, although he was not in the starting lineup Sunday due to his last-minute arrival.

In addition to Stewart, the Tigers also selected the contract of veteran catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia and recalled right-handed reliever Zac Reininger.

Gardenhire said the Tigers don't plan on adding any more position players, but they will add two or three more pitchers in the coming days.

The trio of players arrived nine days after MLB rosters expanded, a delay caused by the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens' playoff run.

The Mud Hens were eliminated Saturday night in Durham, N.C.

Stewart and the other players were informed of their promotion after the game and took a flight to Detroit while their teammates had a 12-hour bus ride back to Toledo.

Stewart hit .264/.364/.480 in 522 plate appearances for the Mud Hens in 2018 after putting up nearly identical numbers a year ago in Double-A Erie.

Saltalamacchia, 33, served as the Tigers backup catcher in 2016 and signed a minor-league deal in March. He spent the entire season in Toledo, hitting .175/.285/.284 in 253 plate appearances.

Looks like it. Only 3 months too late on Stewart.....but hey.....better late than never I guess!

This happens alot with good minor leaguers, teams don't want the FA clock to start early.

Players Union will be hardline shortly with a new person taking over that part of negotiations with Tony Clark.

Yep. Probably why he wasn't brought up when Lugo was.. And they're make sure he doesn't reach the threshold surpassing rookie status.

I don't fully understand that super 2 rule...but Reb tried to explain it to me and from what he said they could have brought him up in May and it would have been fine.

Just going by memory...I could be wrong.

I don't fully understand it myself but it effects arbitration not free agency. To the best of my knowledge. So instead of 3 years before arbitration it would be 4. I think it has something to do about a certain % of players can get super two.. But I don't know how they figure it out.

Christin Stewart did not start today because he just arrived and is on 2 1/2 hours of sleep, but Gardenhire said he will play *every day* this month in left field -- not DH.

That basically means Jones, Reyes and Mahtook will share center field from here on out.

Might as well. Young players need to play the field. And Gardy needs to evaluate him. Hopefully he's better in left than what others are saying.

When I seen him this year, he did OK. Nothing great mind you, but I have read worse reports on him.

I saw him play 3 times this year. He didn't have too much action out there but iirc he made 2 really good plays and didn't botch anything. The one game I went to he had 2 or 3 walks. He really didn't do much at the plate.

On a side note, we were sitting a few rows up near the dugout and he looks smaller than 6'0" 205lbs.
