The 2011 Recruiting Class

I think it might be MD?s best class ever. All 21 recruits red shirted, so they?re all sophomores now, only 4 have washed out. Of these recruits, the bottom of the class has been much better than the top of the class.

Shilique Calhoun, low 3 star, 2nd team All American as a sophomore. Trae Waynes, 2 star, All B1G HM, Matt Scarpinato, low 3 star, started in the BCG last Saturday at DT. Damon Knox, low 3 star, started last half of year at DT. Conner Cook, low to mid 3 star, starting QB, 2nd team All B1G. Jack Allen, mid 3 star, all B1G 2nd team. Ed Davis, 3 star, he?s a stud already and will step right into Denicos?s spot at rush LB. Donovan Clark, was in our 8 man starting O line rotation, played extensively every game. Joel Heath, in the D line rotation. Taiwan Jones, starting OLB already, star in the making. Darien Harris and Arjen Colquhen both play every game at LB and CB. RJ Williamson, is like a 3rd starter at safety, plays as much as Drummond and Lewis. Paul Lang has played some at TE.
Towards the top of the class, we signed JC tackle Fou Fonoti who was a starter for us for 2 seasons. And Lawrence Thomas, who if he ever gets healthy is going to be a force on the D line.

There?s a debate going about whether MD and company develop talent that much better or whether they find talent no one else sees. Well, it?s a little of both. They get their guys to play up to their potential, but they also find studs that no one else sees as studs. Calhoun is obviously blessed with a huge amount of natural ability, he?s got 5 star talent. Trae Waynes, is 6-1, 185 lbs and ran a legit 4.32 forty as a CB, that?s a lot of talent as a 2 star. Darqueze Dennard, Leveon Bell, and Trenton Robinson, all NFL talents that were 2 star recruits. Maybe we'll miss on getting some 4 star guys, but this staff has provn they can find guys just as talented that are 2 and 3 stars.

The 2011 class is going to be very special before they?re through at Michigan State.

i'd say there are 6 NFL players in that class, 7 if you count Sadler

Yep, I'd say Bell (already), Dennard, Drummond, Lippett, Bullough, Gholston (already), and Sadler.

Mumphery and Lewis have a shot too in my opinion.

Disagree on Mumphrey. Not an NFL player IMO. Lewis for sure gets drafted IMO. Lippett has a shot, but he might not be fast enough. AR White is on an NFL practice squad isn't he? Travis Jackson might get a shot, he's a hell of an interior lineman. Langford certainly has the speed and power, has a good shot too.

We're pretty much cranking out 5-8 NFL prospects per class though and now it seems we've got a few 1st rounders on the team too.

Craziest find though might be Jack Conklin. He's a zero star at 6-6-1/2 and 326 lbs, he's got great feet and excels in pass blocking. He's going to be an NFL player if he stays healthy for 4 years. Best left tackle prospect we've had in a long while at State.
