The AAF Thread

I was set to watch it on Saturday but got busy. Glad to see it went well.

I also like some of the rule differences, especially the greater transparency when it comes to officiating. I wouldn't mind seeing the NFL adopt some or all of these differences.

No kickoffs - meh...this is where the NFL is headed anyway, no kickoffs are probably preferable to the current state of kickoffs

Extra points must be 2 point attempts - probably more personal preference but I like the added risk/reward of this style

Overtime rules (both teams get the ball at the opp 10 yard line) - don't care

Sky Judge (extra official in the press box who can make or overturn certain calls) - love this, also because the conversation between the sky judge and officials are broadcast to the viewers. I don't think there's a good reason for the secrecy that the NFL employs when it comes to replays and officiating discussions.

Defensive alignment penalty (no more than 5 can rush, no one can line up more than 2 yds outside the D-line) - different take to protecting the QB, this probably requires more experimentation. I think I prefer this over the escalation of QB-related penalties.

I don't like the last one at all for the NFL. QB's will start throwing more than do now.. Much more scoring. Nor the OT rules. Rest are fine.

I just saw that former Michigan QB Denard Robinson is playing in the AFL. Not sure if at QB or RB though.

I think the AFL a good idea but I would never watch it. It's a bunch of practice squad players.

I'm going to make sure I at least record the game so I can watch some.

But since that's the same for all teams it could be good (competitive). It's like a college game, most of the those guys will never make the pro's but we still watch..

I don't know...I like college football at the highest levels. I wouldn't waste my time watching DII. Heck, I don't even watch MAC games or some of those other shitty conferences. To me, this league is just a bunch of guys that couldn't make it to the next level. I have no interest.

But my point was those D1 at the highest level very few make it to the pros or even at all so why is that any different. Plus maybe there's a future Kurt Warner. Maybe it's like watching The Lions vs Browns. Competitively bad.

I don't think I would even watch the Lions vs. Browns...unless I had some fantasy players going!

I think it has two things going for it currently:

1. Season schedules are set up to sort of keep football going after the NFL is finished, so people who just want to watch football have that option

2. It's not really trying to compete with the NFL (like the USFL did) but rather serve as a complementary league for lesser players to prove themselves (players can opt out their AAF contracts immediately if an NFL team offers them a contract). NFL Europe was shut down due to money, but it was still useful as a developmental tool and even produced some pretty good players. The CFL and others have never been a particularly good substitute because the game is just too different

It may not necessarily be filled with talent but I think its importance could outweigh its entertainment value.

I read they make 250k a year and can opt out after each season. Hope it lasts awhile. I watched some Arena FL at limes I always liked.. It was good for 20 years, went down a bit and hopefully it gets back up. I heard of a NAF (Northern Arena Football) that adds 4 teams in 2019.

It says here that the players get a 3 year, $250K contract that is not guaranteed (about $83K a year)

Now thinking about it 250 would have been a bit high. I wonder if they get insurable.

According to the article "Polian said a contract will include state-of-the-industry health insurance and an education stipend to any player who completes a year in the league."

"State of the industry" probably isn't great given the risks involved in playing in the NFL

Watched my first game tonight, one half Orlando vs San Antanio..

1. I like the no kickoff.
2. I love the fact you can hear the replay official and and head ref.
3. Always 2-point attempt I like as well. NFL will never adopt this imo.
4. I don't like the ref jerseys kind of funny looking.
5. They don't make a ton of money and none of is guaranteed. How can you not like that.

As far as the football goes -- honesly don't see any difference than watching the NFL.
