CC Sabathia has been stifling left-handed hitters for the better part of a decade, so Jim Leyland loads up with right-handed hitters tonight. So why, then, is Jhonny Peralta sitting in favor of switch-hitting Ramon Santiago, you ask? Peralta is 2-for-20 lifetime off his ex-teammate Sabathia, including the postseason.
from Jason Beck' Tigers blog

The Detroit Tigers traded for Jeff Baker to play against left-handed pitchers.
He will face a good one in his Tigers debut.
Baker will bat sixth and start in left field tonight when the Tigers play the New York Yankees in the third game of their four-game series.
Left-hander CC Sabathia (11-3, 3.53 ERA) will start on the mound for the Yankees.
Tigers manager Jim Leyland is starting Gerald Laird at catcher in place of Alex Avila. Ramon Santiago will start at shortstop in place of Jhonny Peralta, who is 1-for-17 (.059) in the regular season against Sabathia. Santiago is 8-for-30 (.267) with a home run against the left-hander.
Laird is 9-for-21 (.429) with a home run against Sabathia, while Baker is 0-for-4 against him.
Anibal Sanchez (1-1, 4.50 ERA with the Tigers) will make his third start for the Tigers since they obtained him in a trade with the Miami Marlins. Sanchez allowed two runs -- one earned -- in six innings pitched and earned the victory in his most recent outing.
Sanchez has one career start against the Yankees. He threw 5 2/3 shutout innings and earned the victory against New York in a start during the 2006 season.

Tigers fans will get their first look at the team's newest acquisition, Jeff Baker, tonight against C.C. Sabathia and the Yankees.
The 31-year-old hit .269 with four home runs and 20 RBIs in 54 games with the Cubs this season. Baker is 0-for-4 lifetime against Sabathia.
Speaking of C.C. Sabathia, he's 11-3 with a 3.53 ERA and 133 strikeouts this season. The following match-ups against the strong left-hander might have defined tonight's Tigers lineup:
Brennan Boesch is 4-for-13 lifetime off Sabathia with a homer.
Gerald Laird is 9-for-21 with a homer. Alex Avila is 1-for-7.
Andy Dirks has never faced Sabathia, but hits .208 vs. lefties.
Ramon Santiago is 8-for-30 with a homer. Jhonny Peralta is 1-for-17.
Delmon Young is 5-for-21. Quintin Berry is 2-for-4. The best hitter against Sabathia in the Tigers' lineup? Not surprisingly, it's Miguel Cabrera, who is 10-for-23 with two home runs.
Anibal Sanchez is on the mound for Detroit, making his third start with the Tigers. He picked up his first win with his new team Aug. 3 against Cleveland, going six innings and giving up two runs, one earned. He's 6-8 with a 3.99 ERA this season.
from the freep

Baker has played just 10 games and 36 innings in LF in his career, and just 2 games, 8 innings in LF from 2008- 2012.

watching some of this rangers/redsox debacle, beckett got creamed, hamilton with a homerun and now tied with Miguel for the rbi lead. 9 - 5 in the 7th...
7th time Josh Beckett has allowed 8+ earned runs at Fenway, passing Red Ruffing for most in live-ball era. Boooooooed non stop when taken out and the lonely walk back to the dugout. wish both teams could lose, asshole players, managers, fans, owners.

lol, so did Reagan...some will like that, some won't,
Elrod, he acts like a spoiled little kid clapping his hands at the dugout steps,
well some redsox player just hit a 3 run homer tie game at 9.

Leyland said he thought Benoit was good to go. Valverde, too, but he wants to have him off either tonight or tomorrow.

No Berry? He lit up CC last time they played. Guess he's the new 25th man.

anyone have mlb.tv? stream is non existent for me. nothin like paying for shit that doesnt work.

It's my daughter's 7th birthday today. Lucky 7. Even though she doesn't watch baseball I hope she can bring some good luck.

Chavez can go ahead and take the next flight to Asstown any time now...

Hmm, here we go with the payback for Texiera shit.

Prince should have charged the mound...but he probably would have gotten too winded by the time he got there to throw a punch.

Sabbathia would probably have also been too winded too, just from standing there and getting ready for him.

I don't care who's pitching I don't want DY in the 5-hole...he absolutely blows there...

They could have a Sumo match and see who can push who off the dirt onto the grass.
