Really good read on how scientists played/have played a huge part in America's military history the last half century. Also how their independence and tendency to ruffle partisan feathers isn't welcomed in the current administration.

Inside a Trump-era purge of military scientists at a legendary think tank

They?re members of a prestigious academic panel with top-secret clearances who?ve advised the Pentagon on some of America?s most vexing national security issues since the Cold War. Over 60 years, they?ve won 11 Nobel prizes and conducted hundreds of government studies.

The advisory group, known as Jason, is a team of some 60 of America?s top physicists and scientists who spend each summer in La Jolla, California, conducting studies commissioned by the Pentagon and other U.S. government agencies.

Lisa Gordon-Hagerty, the head of the National Nuclear Security Administration, objected, telling Griffin?s office the scientists were crucial for keeping America?s nuclear stockpile secure, according to an NNSA official and others affiliated with the Jason program. Gordon-Hagerty?s agency offered to take responsibility for the program. She only needed Griffin?s signature to make it happen.

Griffin refused.

He declined comment, but a Defense Department spokeswoman said the Pentagon decided it had less need for the studies than previously thought. ?The department remains committed to seeking independent technical advice and review. This change is in keeping with this commitment, while making the most economic sense,? said spokeswoman Heather Babb.

So the Dems don't actually want to cut military spending or do they just object to these cuts because Trump's administration is making them?

Can't speak for 'the dems' but I imagine there's a bit of a difference in their minds between $10 billion for some fighter jets and $8 million for a think tank.

Could just be Godless hypocrites hell bent on instilling a socialist agenda to bring down America too. Who can say?

maybe they can drop their think tanks on the enemy, everybody wins.

There's been a whole book written about this topic (Trump's science war) generally, The Fifth Risk, by Michael Lewis.

He claims Trump is exceptionally bad in terms of replacing all employees at federal agencies - not just the political posts, but also the expert ones - with purely political young college Republican types loyal to him.

Bush and Obama both at least left the PhDs, MPPs, and MPHs in place to do their jobs; but Trump has cleared ALL the experts out and replaced them with Yes Men (or Yes Boys and Girls).

The "Fifth Risk" in the book are all the potential problems we're no longer even aware of, and discoveries we're missing out on, because the scientific method & scientific research have been completely gutted from the federal bureaucracy, because, Government = Bad.
