There's been more and more ink spilled lately about the Washington Redskins moniker.

I know Dan Snyder is a total POS d-bag, who - even among generally clueless, greedy pro sports franchise owners - stands out as particularly clueless and greedy. and while I think the name of his team is unquestionably racist, I figured like most similarly named sports teams in the U.S., it was not initially named that way out of any racist intent, just a product of a tone-deaf racially insensitive era.

but then I read this article about the guy who founded the Redskins. And... well... he was a virulent racist himself, and came up with the name to be more racist. And this makes Snyder's comments about knowing the Redskins' traditions and refusing to change the name under any circumstances completely despicable.

from the article:
When George Preston Marshall died in 1969, he left some money to his children but directed that the bulk of his estate be used to set up a foundation in his name. He attached, however, one firm condition: that the foundation, operating out of Washington, D.C., should not direct a single dollar toward ?any purpose which supports or employs the principle of racial integration in any form.? ...

This is the man who gave the Washington Redskins their name. He was one of the most despicable racists in the American sporting arena of the entire 20th century. He thought Redskins was funny, just as he thought the war paint and feather headdress he made the head coach wear were funny. And this is the legacy that current Redskins owner Dan Snyder wants to uphold?

they should change their helmet to a potato.....keep the redskins name, problem solved

clever.

or just be the Washington Senators, Braves, Americans, Generals, Federals, Legionnaires, or Warriors. Dan Snyder can start his own tradition. it'll be fun, and everyone will be happy.
