Wasn't there a similar fumble earlier...

This year that went through the end zone and ruled a touchback and the media blew it up about how any other time a player fumbles forward and ball goes out of bounds it is spotted where fumble happened, but when it goes out the end zone it is for some reason ruled a touchback...and media was all up in arms about how that rule needs to be changed because it unfairly benefits the defense while being completely incongruent with any other fumble situation.

And didn't we acknowledge at that time that the Lions would be screwed by that difference in the rule book?

Forgive me, my brain is fuzzy so I'm not recalling the previous game that got so much attention from this type of play.

And while CJ should have held onto the football, even worse than the ref missing the blatant call is the NFL having the rulebook being so blatantly opposite itself. Imagine if everytime a ball is fumbled forward out of bounds that the D got it at that spot it went out, or was a touchback if it happened in the end zone.

Keep in mind it is like this in college and high school as well. Not sure when this rule was created, but it is pretty illogical.

Don't worry though. IF the rule is changed, it will just mean the Lions get hosed by the rule reversal at some point. Wouldn't be the Lions if they didn't.

The fumble out of end zone IMO is a good rule. It would be too good for the offense if that change. Don't fumble, be happy.

Sorry I don't follow. Ball normally returns to spot where it was last possessed. That is pretty logical IMO. If D wants the ball then they need to possess it.

Keeping in mind I'm very confident Seattle would have recovered it in the end zone for a legit touchback, so I'm not actually upset like most. Just think the consistency, or lack thereof, is a major issue.

Fumble out of bounds is different than back of end zone. Just different rules. I don't see why they should be the same. Just like when you're kicking off, either out of bounds, get ball at 40, or through end zone - touchback.

Just the way I feel. Think its a good rule.

Team is cursed....plain and simple. It's a rule that nobody got on the field...especially the refs.

Offense was garbage.....defense was lights out. Another game stolen from us. Lol

I saw that guy bat the ball out of the endzone. I thought it was a smart play at the time...come to find out this morning it was illegal.

Oh well...same old Lions!

Theo riddick knew, watch the replay he flips out and looks at official.

It wasn't stolen. Calvin just needs to be a smart veteran, understand the game situation and not stretch out for a TD when there is plenty of time left on the clock. I get the call sucks and the refs blew it, but don't even give them that opportunity to make a call.

I was pretty sure it was a rule, I even posted the question in the main game thread before it was mentioned and everyone started flipping out. Coaches need to know. Ref didn't say they didn't know, they said they didn't think it was intentional.

I didn't catch that. I watched most of the game at a bar but had to go in for midnights. A couple buddies and I snuck into the lunchroom and caught the last 2 minutes. When CJ fumbled we all just looked at each other and started laughing lol.

It was stolen. Chancellor made one of the best plays so far this year on that ball. Calvin had the ball tucked under his arm, he wasn't holding it loose or anything. Chancellor contorted his body and got under CJ to punch it out....phenomenal play. KJ Wright then proceeds to tap the ball out of bounds with an official on top of the play. That's a fucking penalty and we got hosed again. Should have been 1st and goal with 1:45 to go. Lions either score to go ahead or kick the FG to tie. Maybe they don't score though and Stafford throws a pick or we fumble again, but the opportunity was ripped from the Lions. This team gets no respect and its showed time and time again. This loss hurts the most.....even more thsn the Cowboys game last year..for me anyways.

And that ref is a fkn retard. That or he doesn't know the rules. Pick one. Blandino already came out and said the ref fucked up.

Not even close in terms of total impact. This team wins and goes 1-3. Still have a massive uphill climb to even sniff the playoffs.

Because I am the master of pointing out the obvious, wild card playoff game >>>>>> game 4 of a team that's 0-3. Plus, the Lions were leading most of the way until that pass interference call pulled away from them in Dallas. Lions had a chance to steal the game, but really didn't deserve it.

Total impact? Deserve it?? Who gives a shit?! Lol. Their record means nothing either. My point is that time and time again, the NFL steals at least the opportunity for the Lions to succeed. Opportunity being the key word. Flags thrown then picked up, refs turning their heads, NFL with their dumbfuck apologies. It's sickening! When does it end?? Every year it's the same garbage. Just when you think that theres no way in hell the Lions could lose a game in a way where you want to kill someone.....this game comes along and rips your fkn heart out..lol.

I get that. I'm just addressing your point about how it affected you more than the wild card game. I think it's just a build up and it's still fresh in your mind. But, I can't change how you feel about it. I don't blame you for being pissed, I just can't agree with it being a bigger call than Dallas, that's all.

I don't think it has anything to do with no respect for the Lions....just incompetent officiating. This shit happens to every team from time to time...it just seems like it happens more to the Lions lately.

The Dallas penalty/not a penalty hurts due to the flag initially being thrown and then picked up. However, in replay, the biggest issue with that play was Stafford threw it into the defenders back so receiver had zero chance to catch it. It is a judgment call that screwed the Lions, but there is a degree of understandability with it that is acceptable.

On this one, many people didn't know the rule. Wright came out after the game admitting that he batted the ball out with the belief it was the right thing and it would be a touchback.

This goes back to my original point, and one many across the nation have brought up. Why is the rule book filled with inconsistent nonsense that makes it so complicated that even the professional refs screw things like this up? Fucking make the rules consistent!

Now, if the rules were consistent then on this particular play Wright grabs the ball and it is a touchback as there were zero Lions close enough to even think they had a chance. So, the end result with a consistent rule book does not change this game's results, so I'm not crying foul or BS by the refs. Game's final outcome was legit based on the plays on the field throughout the game.

However, with the rule book so fucking convoluted, these kinds of hidden rules consistently go against the Lions year after year, game after game. Strip it down and eliminated the "unless/except when/etc." Keep it simple, so that stupid things stop happening.

I know. When he batted the ball I thought it was a smart play because I didn't know the rule. That said...it was at the perfect height for him to just grab it and fall to the ground...he just thought was safer to hit it out of the back of the end zone.

Forward fumbles that are not recovered and leave the field of play are spotted at the point of last possession. Backward fumbles that are not recovered and leave the field of play are spotted where the ball goes out of bounds.

How easy is that? Why make it so complicated by adding in the whole thing with the end zone?

Why is there a difference between forward vs backward? That is actually due to maintaining consistency with whether the ball is a forward or backward lateral. The game is full of differentiating between a ball that moves forward vs backward, so that aspect should remain the same. But adding in this entire thing that a ball fumbled forward going into the end zone and leaving the field of play unrecovered results in the defense getting a touchback is stupid. Then add onto that if a defensive player intentionally bats a ball out of bounds in the end zone, it is a penalty and the ball reverts back to the offense at the point where the ball was last possessed. WHY IS THIS SIMPLE THING MADE SO FUCKING COMPLICATED??? Keeping it simple removes the confusion for everyone, Wright grabs the ball with both hands and Seattle has a touchback.

The layers of confusing and inconsistent rules are why this play blew up and has everyone upset. Simplifying the rule book would have had same end result on the field but the craziness post game would be gone and Lions fans would revert back to why was the O so fucking pathetic again.

As for CJ, people need to stop blaming him. The D is allowed to make plays, and Chancellor made a great play. It happens. CJ didn't have 2 hands on the ball and it was kind of hanging out there due to the hit from his right. Asking a guy to have it locked in tighter probably doesn't prevent what Chancellor did there because he came in with the full intention of knocking that ball out, aiming for it regardless of where CJ had it.
