You guys have all heard the story by now, I assume, right? Basically this rancher out in Nevada has been letting his cattle graze on government property since 1993 (I think that's the year) without paying all of the proper federal taxes for the right to do so. It is a part of the law, but the rancher and his family have gotten away with it until this point. Feds stepped in and seized some of the cattle for illegally using federal property. Of course the family and dozens of conservative wackos ride in and take a stand, armed with weapons and signs that say things like "Am I in russia?" and "united we stand return our land".

Conservative politicians and media come to the rancher's aid, crying that the government is corrupt and stepping outside of the constitution. The rancher owes about a million dollars to the federal government. Think about it.

Someone give me the other side of this story, because I find it hard to believe that anyone actually believes the rancher is in the right on this issue. And please don't bring up the constitution because it does not support the argument.

I don't know.

Farmers actually tend to be traditionally Democrats; this farmer is not unlikely to be a Democrat, regardless of whomever is chiming in with their opinion.

Are there any liberal organizations rallying to the farmer's cause?

There's a property principal known as "adverse possession," which entitles a usurper of a property owner's property rights, after the act of usurpation has been ongoing AND uncontested by the property owner for a certain period of time, to be from therefore on to be continually entitled to those rights of usurpation.

Don't know if applicable or not in this situation.

I've heard the guy talk. I'd say the chances he's liberal are nearly zero. And no liberal groups I know of. Rightfully so. I'm all for protecting personal property, but all that land belongs to the federal gov't. It's well known that you must pay to use it.

Okay.

Anyway it will go, I would guess into the civil judicial system, where it will be decided whether adverse possession or any other legal apparatus relieves this farmer of repayment for use of the land, or not.

And if he's found in debt, I would guess he'll have to pay the bill.

This thread is the first I've heard of this situation.

Tough break.... Don't do the crime if you can't pay the dime......

Original right :)

Hey Monster, I haven't heard the story, and it interests me.

Could you please post a link?

Just saw something on youtube...

"I don't recognize the United States Government as even existing..."

Well...that does sound a little out there...

If that has been his position going back to 1992, arguably he hasn't recognized the United States Government as even existing regardless of whichever party was in the White House, or whichever party was in control the Congress...

What conservatives/conservative groups have come to this guy's support?

Doesn't sound like a real winner to me.

Here's more of the story. Echoes of "Chinatown" where Harry Reid is Noah Cross, and water is solar power. I think the character of Noah Cross is more mentally stable than Reid.

ARE we in Russia? 80% of Nevada's land is federally owned. A huge parcel of the states west of Nebraska is.

The usurping of the land uncontested since 1993 should actually and legally entitle the farmer to continue using that government land without paying.

But yeah, the guy is a nut job, no less so than the nut hobs who move into foreclosed homes and are allowed to live there under same usurpation laws.

Besides, where is the "problem". Is it because of the fertilizer the cows are leaving behind? It went unnoticed for so long, what changed? Is the government trying to build something there now, or sell the land, or did someone suddenly take over and got upset?

It's about "follow the money" like it always is with government. Read the link I posted.

Why is he a nut job? Because he challenges the government's changing policy on grazing that is designed to put him out of business? We need more nut jobs like this man: people willing to speak up and make a stand for his individual sovereignty.

When Michigan was transferred to Ann Arbor, a significant plot of land was given to Michigan. Ann Arbor boomed, and by the time they were ready to sell it to raise funds, the value of those lands would have made Michigan one of the wealthiest universities in the nation. But long-time squatters managed to keep the land.

What's wrong with it being federally owned?

Wait...if I refuse to pay my taxes for long enough and the government comes for my house, you'll come to my rescue? Gun toting, sign waving?

I'm not sure if the government had been trying to collect their money before this or not, but if this idiot can get away with it, anybody can. It sets a terrible example if this man can use federal land for free for 21 years, bring in a bunch of rifles to "intimidate" the government, and then keep everything he has and continue his leaching of the system.

How much do republicans bitch and moan about single parents getting food stamps, calling them moochers and lazy, and now they're okay with this cattle rancher mooching? bullshit.

whether you like the law or not, we all have to follow it. You don't have a special right to not follow the law and the government does not have a special right to go further than the law allows. Whoever crosses that line are the ones who need to be punished. I think it's obvious the rancher is at fault here, legally.

I don't give a shit if he says his ancestors worked that land long ago or not. The government owns it now. I'm not sure how it came to be, but that's how it is. I feel bad that ranchers are going out of business because of these fees, but it's still federal law. I don't like it. Nobody does. But if you own a piece of land and tell people they have to pay you to use it, that's your right. Right?

If this idiot and his republican pals want to do something, they should actually try to change the law. Rally support. Start a bill to make it easier for ranchers to graze. Standing up to them with guns does absolutely nothing and only encourages another waco. Sorry, but this has to be done legally just like all matters like this.

No, he's a nut job because he doesn't recognize the federal government as a legitimate entity. If he really wanted to do something, he should have actually tried to get the law changed...not defy it. This is the United States in 2014, not 1800. You can't just stand outside your house with a rifle and tell the government to get off your property. There are laws that must be followed. I don't think it's asking too much to do this the legal way.

He has politicians on his side now and some big conservative groups. Instead of encouraging another Waco, they should be encouraging change. I don't see that happening. I could and absolutely would support him if he were doing that. Instead, he takes the hard right approach like every conservative wacko out there.

So these guys want something for nothing from the government, yet I bet they all bitch about people on welfare, food stamps, etc.

Bundy has no legal case, not because of the law qua law, but because the BLM changed it on him. If you read the link I offered, you'd see why he, or anyone, might object.

THIS is another whacko in this scenario: ?We can?t have an American people that violate the law and just walk away from it,? Mr. Reid told Reno TV station KRNV. ?So it?s not over.?
