MSU basektball recruiting

If he does sign I'm sure as heck not going to say it's a bad thing but adding McCoy might almost make the frontcourt too crowded. The rotation of bigs would probably work perfectly with what we have right now with Jackson, Schilling, and Ward getting most of the minutes at the 4/5 and then Tillman pitching in here and there as a 4th big.

Unless there is a repeat of this past season with the injuries......

I know people poo poo Schilling, but he's going to be a huge piece next season regardless of who we sign. Because he can guard the high pick and roll so well and is comfortable playing D outside the paint on smaller players. I saw Jackson guard guys well the last couple weeks outside too, he really gets low to the ground and moves his feet well.

Ward, Tillman, and maybe McCoy will be able to guard the center.

And rebounding, wow. Miles Bridges will be the best rebounbing small forward in the nation. Tillman is a monster rebounder, but McCoy would probably be the best rebounder on the team if he signed.

McCoy was interviewed in the ESPN recruiting/commit show today. Said he was thinking of committing today, but has reconsidered where he might go. Oregon writers saying this is bad news for them. NATional writers agree.

Could have something to do with Bridges. This could be huge!

Jerry Meyer, 247:
Michigan State signee Jaren Jackson saw his stock rise enormously during the travel team season, and his stock continues to trend upward.

A 6-10 four-man out of La Porte (Ind.) La Lumber School, Jackson is the son of a 13 year NBA player and looks to be headed to a long NBA career as well. Jackson shoots with range, is quick to the ball as a rebounder and shot blocker and has the ability to finish in traffic.

And he continues to steadily improve.

Ranked No. 21 in the 247Sports Composite and No. 22 in the Top247 going into the all star season, Jackson has had impressive moments at McDonald's and the Nike Hoop Summit.

Most impressive was the 13 point and 10 rebound performance in the Nike Hoop Summit. Jackson played with instincts, quickness and strength.

He also was perhaps the top performer in the scrimmage prior to the McDonald's All American Game.

A lower five-star ranking for Jackson wasn't that far off at all coming out of the summer, but somewhere near or in the top 10 looks much more accurate at this point.

Reports are that Brian Bowen reached out to the staff and asked if we still had a spot for him, the staff told him no. Means to me that the staff might have already told Smith they have a guaranteed spot for him along with McCoy.

Not sure if this means we flat out told Bowen no (I doubt that), or that we told him we have to see about Smith and McCoy first.

McCoy delayed his decision further. Oregon writers say this is bad news for Oregon, who knows though. Recruiting is crazy. I will say that although Jackson has a higher upside than McCoy, McCoy is the type of player Izzo loves, he does the dirty work down low and rebounds like a mad man and gets a lot of points cleaning up the mess in the paint.

I know we have 2 scholarships available if Goins keeps his (his is year to year). We're going to fill both of those spots one way or another. Carter applied for a 6th year, but it's a strange case and he probably won't get it IMO. We are adding a combo guard/wing for sure, Smith is the top target, but if we miss on him a grad transfer who is ready to contribute right away will happen. The only potential weakness on next year's team is perimeter defense and ball handling depth.

Surprised Bowen would still be interested with Bridges returning.

I think with Trier coming back to Zona it's the same thing there so he maybe figured MSU is his first love, why now go to MSU. There is a real possibility he ends up at Creigton now, getting a lot of minutes is important to him.

Jackson continues his climb in the rankings. #6 on Rivals, #8 in ESPN, and is said to be in 247's new top 10 which comes out next week. Scout is still behind.

Should end up composite #8 or so. Highest ranked recruit we've brought in since Shannon Brown.

Edit: SCOUT's new rankings have come out, Jaren Jackson is the #5 player and #1 pF in their rankings. So he's ranked #5, #6, #7, and #8. Like I've said before, we already have the highest ranked recruit we are after. Jackson is a bigger fish than McCoy or Bowen.

Mark Smith's recruitment is heating up. He was a late bloomer because he throws a 93 mph fastball and just decided to focus on basketball his senior season. He visited Illinois yesterday and didn't commit. Now it looks like he's visiting Ohio State this weekend and may visit Kentucky and Duke next week.

We led for him at one point, but this is a whirlwind for him so who knows now. I think it's less than 50-50 we sign him. If we do not sign him we will look for a grad transfer wing. Smith is a special player though, reminds me of Gary Harris.

We are no longer recruiting Brian Bowen. We've moved on.

McCoy is still a possibility, depends on what he wants out of his 1 year in college, does he want to be the man, or be part of a great team for one year.

Missing 3 guys that we led for this late is horrible!!! Meanwhile, most of the other guys we had interest in are gone to "lesser" programs. Izzo really needs to hire a closer for his recruiting.

I'll assume you're being sarcastic.

Top 50 recruits brought into the Big Ten the last 2 classes:
Tom Izzo-5
All other Big 10 coaches combined-2

Top 40 recruits brought into the Big Ten the last 2 classes:
Tom Izzo- 4
All other Big 10 coaches combined- 0

McDonald's All Americans brought into the Big Ten the last 3 classes:
Tom Izzo - 4
All other Big 10 coaches combined- 3

He's doing OK.

He had a good class last year, but couldn't land Josh Jackson who for a very long time was considered ours to lose.

You should really go back and look at the last 10 classes and see how many guys were just late fill ins because we missed on big fish at the end. There's a reason we always have a walk on or 2 getting minutes.

Mark Smith is announcing 7 pm Wednesday night. Illinois is probable, but we have a shot. He wants to help bring Illinois back, but his dad wants him to go to MSU.

If he ends up at Illinois, that's an all time low for Izzo.

A home town kid wants to stay close to home and revitalize his favorite program that just got a new coach? He told Coach K and Coach Cal no too, is this a low for them? Hell, we just offered him a few weeks ago.

I don't believe Duke nor Kentucky ended up offing him. We were the biggest offer he had.

I just hope we sit on the open scholarships for next year when we miss on all 3 of these kids. I don't want to see us end up with a couple MAC level players. Maybe bring in a grad transfer player for guard depth.

McCoy just committed to UNLV lol

Yep, makes absolutely 0 sense to me. I dont ever expect these guys to commit anymore no matter what a "crystal ball"says, he had an "11% chance" of attending. next up Bowen to an out of state school.
