Lions sign Stafford to 5 year $135 Million deal, highest paid QB, now restructured

Your math might be off. tigermud said he is in a 20 team league. Even if he was only the 17th best QB, and that's a big if, he would certainly be a starter. I'm not claiming he's a fantasy world beater, but to say he's a backup in a 20 team league is silly.

If people disagree, I'd love to get some of you in my big money league. We'd love to have you!

he's in a league that has two 10 team conferences, which 99% of the time means it's actually two separate 10 team leagues that face off in a "superbowl"

If that's the case, I wouldn't call it a 20 team league then (his words, not yours). It's obviously a lot more understandable if he wasn't taken in the top 10 (QBs). I stand by my comments that the fact that he has not won a playoff game, as sad as that is, should have no bearing on his fantasy value.

I agree...I like fantasy QBs who are on shitty teams...more often than not they are force to pass more because they are either close games or they are behind.

4th quarter comebacks can be a bit overlooked. Maybe get the lead early by playing great and you won't need 4th quarter comebacks so much. And many times it was a key INT that helped us win, or bad clock management by the other team etc. If you're not going to blame Matt, at Matt himself, for the losses maybe the opposite should also hold true.

And this has nothing to do with not wanting him as a QB just the amount he got paid. And yes it's the market doesn't mean I have to be happy about it.

Didn't say you had to be happy. I said myself I wasn't exactly happy yet, I want to see how it plays out first.

I do know this I'd feel more apprehensive about where the team was heading if we didn't have Matt locked up. A whole lot of unknowns in that scenario. We could turn into the Cleveland Browns QB carousel trying to find the next guy, or we could draft the next Tom Brady lol.

Or we could still not win a playoff game. I know I'm in the minority but imo, losses fall on the QB. And this is also an NFL thing where I think they're going in the wrong direction. Cap keeps going up, already talk about a stoppage in the next few years because players want NBA money/Curry money. I can't go to games anymore because it's become too expensive.. Outside the Lions I don't even feel like watching other games..

We got elite QB play for the next 6 seasons. At a discount really (could have commanded 30 per).

Everyone should be very very happy.

Now get the run game going, less drops, force more defensive turnovers and stay relatively healthy. Big things for this team. Can't wait

you aren't missing much. I prefer to watch a game at home anyway.

It is convenient for sure but still.. Everything else has gone up so why not football games. But I don't get many chances to watch Detroit ..

Full details with cap hit. His number went from 22.5 this year to 16.5. Lions have over 12 million in space now and can carry over to next year

26.5 million cap hit next year. Lions have 68 million in space plus the 12 million carryover plus the cap increase for 2018. Lions will have well over 55 million in cap space including the Stafford deal for 2018. They have a ton of cap room

This is a very good deal

And for 2017, now Stafford has the 16th highest cap hit for QBs. He was 5th before the deal. Down to 16.5 cap hit for 2017

but that does no good unless they are going to try and extend someone else...right?

Wonder why they wanted the cap space this year? Hopefully should see a signing soon. Maybe a LB or DE?

....or maybe a Megatron!

I was really hoping we'd get Ealy but the Jets had a higher waiver claim than the Lions. Slim pickings outside of a trade now.

In 2017, the Lions reduced Stafford’s base salary from $16.5 million to $1 million. Even after you factor in the $10 million prorated hit for the signing bonus, the extension clears up $5.5 million in cap space this year.

Stafford’s base salaries for the five years of the extension are $9.5 million in 2018, $13.5 million in 2019, $15 million in 2020, $9.5 million in 2021 and $12.5 million in 2022. Only the 2018 base salary is fully guaranteed. 2019 is guaranteed for injury only.

Additionally, Stafford has roster bonuses, due the first week of the new league year, each of the next five seasons. Starting in 2018, they are $6.5 million, $5.5 million, $6 million, $10 million and $10 million. The 2018-20 bonuses are guaranteed only for injury.

Finally, Stafford has a $500,000 workout bonus each of the five seasons.

STAFFORD PUTS THE TEAM ON HIS BACK
Matthew Stafford has 26 game-winning drives over the last five seasons, pacing the league in the stat over that period. The Lions QB worked his magic in eight of the team's nine wins in 2016, the most game-winning drives in a single season since the AFL and NFL merged in 1970.

STAFFORD GETTING BETTER EACH OF LAST THREE SEASONS
Matthew Stafford reached the top 10 in QBR last season and has seen an increase in his efficiency in the last two years. In 2016, the Lions also finished with their best single-season efficiency rank since they were sixth in 2011.

STAFFORD IS A PASSING MACHINE
Matthew Stafford's 278 yards per game in the first eight seasons of his career are the most in NFL history, with Andrew Luck not too far behind. Dan Marino, Kirk Cousins and Kurt Warner round out the list.

PLAYOFF SUCCESS NOT NECESSARY FOR BIG PAYDAY
Matthew Stafford is the third quarterback in NFL history to get a contract with at least $70 million guaranteed. Those three QBs have combined to win three playoff games in their careers -- and all three games were won by Andrew Luck.

Stafford is a good qb, but he is NOT in the realm of Rothelisberger, Brady, Rodgers, or Brees. This amount of money says he is better. This a fucking joke and this is foolish of the Lions to dish out this sort of coin on this dude.
