Before defensive coordinator Teryl Austin knew about the practices being canceled, he talked up the advantages of getting a closer look at a top-notch organization.

"I think the things you gain are just situational awareness and maybe what other teams think because we all know what we think and what our offense thinks, and what we like to do," defensive coordinator Teryl Austin said. "But you may get a different perspective on it."

But, it's not going to happen now. Instead, the Lions will play their starters for the longest of any preseason game Friday against the defending champs, and that'll provide some gauge of where they've come as a team.

Lions OC Jim Bob Cooter said he is "very confident" the Lions will run the ball more efficiently this year. Of improving the run game this year: "It's been a big, big emphasis for me, myself."

Lions DC Teryl Austin said Glover Quin & Darius Slay are starters. "Other than that, guys are fighting for positions." That means Nevin Lawson and Tavon Wilson are still in competitions.

Lions DC Teryl Austin on generating a pass rush: "I'm not sure I'll be able to let you know that until we get into the real thing. At that point, we'll find out."

Lions HC Jim Caldwell on run game: Mentions at least 100 yards a game as a barometer. Said they don't need 150 yards a game but need to be "respectable" there. Lions have not had a strong run game since his arrival.

Lions HC Jim Caldwell said the joint walk through with the Patriots is off because of how a joint practice would be classified.

Eric Ebron, TJ Jones, Cyrus Kouandjio, Noel Thomas, Dontez Ford, Dez Stewart, Thurston Armbrister and Adairius Barnes the Lions not spotted during the open portion of practice Tuesday.

There are now 16 days until the start of the NFL season.
Matthew Stafford has led the Lions on 16 game-winning drives over the last three seasons, most in the NFL in that span.

Lions team president Rod Wood said if Detroit gets the draft,
"I promised him if the draft was here, no one would boo him." Him is Roger Goodell.
The Lions have applied to host the 2020, 2021 drafts.

Roger Goodell said brain injury research a top issue for them: "We know an awful lot less" about the brain and brain injuries than they should. Said research is important to them.

Former Lions OL Lomas Brown just apologized to Lions fans for "not reaching the pinnacle," meaning the Super Bowl. Brown was part of the mid-1990s teams that had the best chance of it.

Lions team president Rod Wood said he is not seeking out being on"Hard Knocks," but believes it is an interesting platform.
Roger Goodell said he understands why teams don't volunteer for it.
