June 10 in Tigers and mlb history:

1903 - Detroit SS Kid Elberfeld? suspended for abusing an umpire? is traded to the New York Highlanders for veteran infielders Herman Long? 37? and Ernie Courtney. The Highlanders' first trade is a good one as "The Tabasco Kid"? currently hitting .341? will be a key ingredient in New York's rise as contenders in 1904. Elberfeld had also been accused by Tiger manager Ed Barrow of deliberately throwing games recently as a ploy to get himself traded.

1921 - Babe Ruth of the New York Yankees becomes the major leagues' career home run leader by hitting his 120th off Cleveland Indians pitcher Jim Bagby in the 3rd inning. The Indians win, 8 - 6. Roger Connor held the record until that time.

1957: Frank Lary gives up a 3rd-inning homer to Mickey Mantle in Detroit? but still beats the Yankees? 9 - 4. Mantle now leads the American League with 15 homers. Tigers homerun hitters for the day include Harvey Kuenn, 2 from Charlie Maxwell, and Al Kaline.

1958 - The Tigers fire manager Jack Tighe after a 21 and 28 start to the season? replacing him with Bill Norman.

1984: At Baltimore, the Tigers sweep two from the Orioles? winning 10 - 4 and 8 - 0? before 51?764 fans. Kirk Gibson has six hits and six RBIs in the two games? while Alan Trammell and Howard Johnson each have 5 hits. Lou Whitaker scores 5 runs in game 1. Reliever Doug Bair wins the opener and Dan Petry allows just 3 hits in the nitecap win. The Tigers record now is at 43 and 14, as they continue to steamroll through the league on their way to an historic season.

1904: At Detroit? the Tigers beat the Senators? 8 - 3? behind Wild Bill Donovan. Donovan? batting 8th? hits a two-run homer? while his teammate Ed Gremminger clubs his only homer of the year? reportedly the first homer in 7 years to be hit over the fence.

1925: In pre-game ceremonies? the World Series flag is raised in Washington. Then Ty Cobb drives in 2 runs in the 1st inning off Walter Johnson to lead the Tigers to a 7 - 4 win.

1927 - The Philadelphia Athletics field a team of seven future Hall of Famers in the 9th inning: Ty Cobb (RF), Mickey Cochrane (PH), Eddie Collins (2B), Jimmie Foxx (1B), Lefty Grove (P), Al Simmons (CF) and Zack Wheat (LF). After 5 wins in a row? the A's lose to the Tigers? 5 - 4. Cy Perkins started as catcher batting seventh? but when Cochrane pinch-hit for him in the last inning? seven Cooperstown-bound players were in the lineup. On May 24th of 1928? the A's will again field 7 HOFers and combine with the Yanks to showcase 13 Hall of Famers.

1954: The Tigers hit 6 home runs in a game against the Athletics? winning 16 - 5? to get them back to the .500 level. Both 3B Ray Boone and teammate Al Kaline hit grand slams. For Kaline? he becomes the youngest player to hit a grandslam since Joe Dimaggio, and is one of 3 grand slams he will hit in his career.

1961: At Tiger Stadium, Norm Cash becomes the first Detroit player to hit a fair ball over the right field roof.

1994 - Detroit defeats California by a score of 11 - 5 as OF Kirk Gibson drives home 7 of the runs on a pair of homers.

2011: The Tigers catch the Indians atop the AL Central with an 8 - 1 win over Seattle. Max Scherzer picks up his 8th win, tied for the AL lead, defeating Michael Pineda.
