Dave Dombrowski's bullpen problems following him to Boston.
When it comes to acquiring relievers, Dave Dombrowski hasn?t had much luck in recent seasons. He?s made a lot of great signings and trades over the years, but as of late it?s as though someone has been following him around with voodoo dolls and pins.

Prior to the 2014 season, as GM of the Tigers, Dombrowski signed closer Joe Nathan to a free agent contract. Nathan proceeded to log 35 saves, but he had a 4.81 ERA and a number of implosions. The following April, he had Tommy John surgery.

In July 2014, the Tigers traded for Joakim Soria, hoping he could bolster their underperforming bullpen. Instead, the former Kansas City closer had a 4.51 ERA over 13 appearances, then allowed five runs in one inning of work in the ALDS.

In December 2015, in his first big move after taking over as president of baseball operations in Boston, Dombrowski dealt for Craig Kimbrel. The all-star closer suffered six losses, had a career-high 3.40 ERA, and his 31 saves were his fewest in a full season. His walk rate was an ugly 5.1.

Later that December, Carson Smith was acquired via trade from Seattle. Instead of being the shut-down setup man Boston was counting on, Smith had Tommy John surgery after making just three appearances.

This past offseason, Dombrowski traded for Tyler Thornburg, with the expectation that he will fill the role Smith hasn?t been healthy enough to handle. Thornburg has been shut down most of the spring with shoulder weakness.

That?s three subpar performances, two surgeries, and a still-unresolved health issue. Meanwhile, a pair of Dombrowski-acquired starters, David Price and Drew Pomeranz, are also in injury-concern limbo. Like Thornburg, their pitching wings might be fine, but there are concerns.

I don?t know if Dombrowski drinks. If he does, a shot of courage might be in order the next time he pulls the trigger on a late-inning arm.

Mike Trout proposes umpire change.
You would be hard-pressed to find a player who is more universally liked than Mike Trout. He seems to have a running banter with almost everyone when he plays, from opposing catchers to infielders, to umpires.

It was during one of those chats with a veteran umpire earlier this spring that Trout offered a thought: As the experienced umpires work their way back into game shape in spring training, just as the players do, why not have them work five or six innings and turn over the last innings to umpires who would normally work minor league games on back fields?

The idea is simple, but has a lot of helpful layers, beyond allowing an older plate umpire a little more time to work into condition in spring to see 350 or so pitches in a given game. It is extraordinarily difficult for young umpires to advance in the industry because there is little annual turnover among umpires in the big leagues. For a young umpire slated for Class A or AA to get a few innings in a major league exhibition -- with the packed ballpark and major league players -- would be something of a reward, as it is for the minor league players.

One evaluator noted that it would also give baseball officials another chance to see the young umpires at work, under conditions closer to those they experience in the higher levels.

When Trout?s idea was conveyed to baseball officials over the last week, they loved it. "It makes a lot of sense for a lot of different reasons," said one official.
Added another: "That?s Trout -- he?s always paying attention to stuff beyond what he?s doing.

Re-assigned Anthony Gose as a pitcher? Tigers will investigate.
Mlive

Tigers manager Brad Ausmus revealed during a pregame media briefing Sunday from the dugout at Joker Marchant Stadium that Gose will get a bit of a look at pitcher.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound left-hander was a pitcher in high school who could throw in the mid-90s.

"He came back to us (after being cut) with the idea that - we had talked about internally at the end of last season - he's going to actually throw a couple of bullpens," Ausmus said.
