Tigers 12 - Twins 11: Justin Upton with a walkoff bomb.
BYBTB

August 13 in Tigers and mlb history:

1900: A mechanical pitching machine is used in a game between the Memphis Chicks and the Nashvilles. The invention of Princeton professor Charles Hinton, the early pitching gun strikes out two and allows three hits in two innings.

1902: In the 6th inning of a game with the Tigers, Harry Davis of the A's attempts a double steal with Dave Fultz, who is on third base. But Davis does not draw a throw as he goes into second, and Fultz cannot score. So, on the next pitch, he "steals" first base. The next time he steals second, he does draw a throw and Fultz scores from third. This double steal maneuver will be attempted in later years by Fred Tenney (July 31, 1908), and Detroit's Germany Schaefer (September 4, 1908), before being made illegal.

1906: The Washington Senators purchased Jack Warner from the Detroit Tigers.

1908: Cy Young Day is celebrated by 20,000 in Boston. He pitches briefly against an All-Star team that includes Jack Chesbro, Hal Chase, Willie Keeler, Harry Davis and George Mullin. The game is interrupted several times for presentations to the great hurler, including a great loving cup from the American League for all his accomplishments.

1910: In the most evenly matched game ever, the Pirates and Superbas each have eight runs, 13 hits, 38 at bats, five strikeouts, three walks, one hit batter, one passed ball, 13 assists, 27 putouts, two errors, and use two pitchers. Darkness ends the game before the symmetry does.

1911: Ty Cobb, apparently believing the Tigers can no longer win the pennant race, begins a vacation.

1934: In a preview of the World Series, the Cardinals play the Tigers in an exhibition game in Detroit. The Deans refuse to make the trip, having both pitched the day before. Dizzy is fined $100 and Paul $50.

1947: At Sportsman's Park, pinch-hitter Willard Brown of the Browns becomes the first black player to hit a home run in the American League. The historic homer, a pinch-hit inside-the-parker off future Hall of Fame hurler Hal Newhouser, helps the Browns beat the Tigers 6 - 5.

1954: The White Sox top the Tigers, 1-0 in 16 innings. Al Aber goes the distance (15.1 innings) in the loss for a Game Score of 101. Jack Harshman gets a complete-game shutout win for a Game Score of 109.

1969: With a unanimous vote, the major league owners elect Commissioner Bowie Kuhn to a seven-year term.

1972: Tigers manager Billy Martin literally picks his starting lineup out of a hat in an attempt to halt the Tigers' 4-game losing streak. The ploy works as Detroit defeats Cleveland 3 - 2. Using a regular lineup in the nightcap, the Tigers lose 9 - 2.

1984: At Cooperstown, the Tigers beat the Atlanta Braves, 7 - 5 in the annual Hall of Fame Game.

1991: The Detroit Tigers released John Shelby.

1995: Flags fly at half-mast at Yankee Stadium as Yankee legend Mickey Mantle dies of liver cancer at the age of 63 in Dallas, Texas.

2004: The Detroit Tigers signed Jorge Toca as a free agent.
2004: The Detroit Tigers released Danny Patterson.
2004: The Detroit Tigers traded a player to be named later and Jon Connolly (minors) to the Chicago Cubs for Felix Sanchez. The Detroit Tigers sent Eric Eckenstahler (August 13, 2004) to the Chicago Cubs to complete the trade.

2007: Placido Polanco plays his 144th consecutive game at second base without an error. This breaks Luis Castillo's record, set earlier this season. The two streaks overlapped for many months. The Tigers still lose 7 - 2, dropping them to 8 wins in their past 25 games and a tie for first place with the Indians.

2013: The Detroit Tigers purchased Ronny Paulino from the Baltimore Orioles.

2014: The Pittsburgh Pirates selected Ramon Cabrera off waivers from the Detroit Tigers.

Tigers calling up reliever Jeff Ferrell from Triple-A Toledo.
Freep

RHP Jeff Ferrell was promoted to #Tigers. He was 2-1 w/ 2 saves & 2.51 ERA in 41 games here.
Among the candidates most likely to be sent to Toledo, reliever Edward Mujica seems to be the leader. He allowed three earned runs on four hits in just 1 1/3 innings in Saturday's walk-off win over the Twins. He has a 9.95 ERA in 6 1/3 innings since his call up earlier this month.
The other possible candidate would be prized prospect Joe Jimenez. He's in his second stint with the Tigers this season. On Saturday, he allowed two hits over two innings. He has an 11.88 ERA in just 8 1/3 innings this season in Detroit.

Boyd tries to slow down hot Twins, Santana.
Tigers official site

Three things to know about this game
Santana struggled the last time he faced the Tigers, allowing five runs on seven hits, including two homers, over 3 1/3 innings on July 21. But he's bounced back to post a 3.32 ERA in three starts since then.

Boyd pitched well the last time he faced Minnesota, allowing three runs over six innings with a season-high eight strikeouts on July 23. Boyd has a history with the Twins after throwing a pitch behind third baseman Miguel Sano on April 22. Boyd, though, remained in that game, while Sano was suspended a game for shoving catcher James McCann.

The Tigers are experimenting with moving third baseman Nicholas Castellanos to right field, and he's open to the idea. But he's remaining at third base for now as he works with third-base coach Dave Clark on his outfield defense.

WIN VS. TWINS AMONG HIGHEST-SCORING WALKOFFS IN TIGERS HISTORY.
Justin Upton's two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Tigers' a 12-11 victory over the Twins. It was the third-highest scoring game in Tigers history that Detroit won with a walk-off homer.
Ty Cobb hit a walk-off shot in a 16-15 victory against the White Sox in 1925,
and Alex Avila did so in a 13-12 triumph over the Red Sox in 2012. (Elias Sports Bureau).

The Tigers? Nicholas Castellanos has lined up at third base in 512 of 521 career appearances, but a position change is looming. Castellanos approached GM
Al Avila and manager Brad Ausmus about moving to the outfield, and he began doing work in right before the Tigers played on Saturday.
He?ll see game action there during the season?s final weeks if he shows progress in practice, revealed Ausmus, who added that Castellanos is ?gung-ho? about a possible change.
With a minus-62 defensive runs saved and a minus-42.1 Ultimate Zone Rating in 4,000-plus career innings, the metrics indicate that the 25-year-old Castellanos hasn?t exactly been Nolan Arenado-esque at third base.
And shifting him to the outfield, where he played in nine games as a rookie in 2013, would seemingly open up third for prospect Jeimer Candelario.
The Tigers acquired Candelario, 23, from the Cubs last month in a trade involving reliever Justin Wilson and catcher Alex Avila. Candelario?s currently at Triple-A, but with Sept. 1 roster expansion on the horizon, he?ll be a factor in Detroit soon.
