Detroit Tigers Team Notes Over 3 Million Views!!! Thankyou!

August 19 in Tigers and mlb history:

1900: In American League action, Rube Waddell throws two complete games as Milwaukee sweeps a doubleheader from the Chicago White Stockings, 2 - 1 and 1 - 0. After throwing 17 innings in the first game, the colorful southpaw is coaxed by skipper Connie Mack, who promises him a few days off to go fishing to pitch the nightcap, he hurls a five-inning one-hitter.

1901: Kid Nichols and Christy Mathewson square off for the third time in seven days, with Nichols winning easily, 11 - 6. New York makes four errors, but a tired Matty is pasted for 13 hits while striking out just one.

1905: The Tigers purchase Ty Cobb from minor league Augusta, for a reported $500. and the rest is history.

1907: Red Downs hits his first major league home run off Cy Young. He will hit only two more in his career.

1910: At Cincinnati, the Giants win, 9 - 3, beating Jack Rowan. Christy Mathewson allows nine hits in coasting to his 20th win of the year and his 17th straight victory over the Reds.

1911: Thirty-five thousand gather at the not-yet-completed Polo Grounds to watch the Reds finally get to Christy Mathewson after 22 straight losses, beating him for the first time since May 1908. Matty, after saving the 5 - 4 opener for Hooks Wiltse with two scoreless frames, starts the nightcap, goes five innings, and loses, 7 - 4. Mike Mitchell leads the Reds in the nitecap by hitting for the cycle off Matty, and adding a double.

1915: Red Faber pitches the White Sox to a 2 - 1 win over the Red Sox, beating Rube Foster. With the Tigers' win over the A's, Boston and Detroit are virtually tied for 1st.

1917: Coaching at third base in a 1 - 1 game against Washington, Ty Cobb gives baserunner George Burns a shove when Burns stops at third on a long hit; Burns keeps going and scores the winning run. Clark Griffith protests, and Ban Johnson upholds him, as the rules now ban coaches from touching a runner. The game is replayed, and Washington wins 2 - 0.

1918: Walter Johnson beats St. Louis, 4 - 3, in 14 innings. The Big Train will work in 15 extra-inning games, including two of 18 innings, one of 16 innings, and another of 15 innings.

1921: At the age of 34, Ty Cobb becomes the youngest player to collect 3000 hits when he singles off Red Sox hurler Elmer Myers in a 10 - 0 Tigers win. It takes Cobb just 2,135 games to do that.

LF Bobby Veach is 4 for 4, and the Tigers bang out 19 hits. Only RF Harry Heilmann is hitless but still batting .403 on the season.

1930: In the first of two, Chicago's Hack Wilson connects off Phils P Les Sweetland for his 43rd home run, tying Chuck Klein's National League record set last year. In RF, Klein waves to Wilson as he circles the bases. The Phils hold on for a 9 - 8 win with Claude Willoughby the winner over rookie Bud Teachout. The second game ends in a 6 - 6 tie after 16 innings.

1931: At Chicago, Lefty Grove (25-2) wins his 16th consecutive game, 4 - 2, tying the American League record set by Walter Johnson and Joe Wood in 1912. Grove holds the Sox scoreless till the 9th, while the A's score in the 2nd, 3rd and 8th off Red Faber. Grove has completed games in all but one of the wins.

1938: Hank Greenberg hits 3 home runs in a doubleheader, including a walk-off shot in Game 1, raising his season total to 41. Tigers sweep the browns 8 - 7, and 7 - 4.

1945: In game two of a doubleheader against the Reds, 37-year-old slugger Jimmie Foxx makes his first major league start, pitching the first seven innings for the Philadelphia Phillies. He leaves with a 4 - 1 lead, and Andy Karl saves Foxx's only decision, a 6 - 2 final. Double X's ERA in 10 appearances is 1.52.

Mantle adds two stolen bases before Jack Reed takes over in CF and has two at bats.

1968: Bob Gibson pitches the Cardinals to a 2 - 0 win over the Phillies. Gibson strikes out Dick Allen four times, the 7th time this season the Phils' slugger has K'ed four times. He will strike out a career-high 161 times this season.

1970: Fergie Jenkins homers and his teammates add another six as Chicago coasts over San Diego, 12 - 2. Jim Hickman (2), Glenn Beckert, Johnny Callison, Joe Pepitone, and Billy Williams also hit round trippers for Chicago. Six of the Cub homers are solo shots and San Diego adds a solo homer: the seven solo homers by two teams sets a National League record and ties the major league mark set on April 29, 1962.

1974: Reds 2B Joe Morgan drives in seven runs as Cincinnati rolls over Philadelphia, 15 - 2. Morgan has a grand slam and a three-run homer, then leaves after three innings when the Reds build a 14 - 0 lead.

1980: Jon Matlack holds George Brett hitless, snapping his hitting streak at 30 consecutive games, but Kansas City rallies for three runs in the 9th to beat Texas, 4 - 3. Brett batted .467 during the streak and knocked in 42 runs.

1987: Kirk Gibson and Darrell Evans go deep for Detroit, and Walt Terrell holds the Twins to 1 run in a complete game 7 - 1 Tiger's victory. After falling 11 games back in the division race in May, the Tigers now take sole possession of first place.

Rob Deer has a grand slam for the Brewers, and tomorrow will hit another to become just the 11th player in history to hit grand slams in consecutive games.

1992: Mariners 2B Bret Boone makes his major league debut against the Orioles. By doing so, he becomes the first third-generation player in the major leagues, following in the footsteps of his grandfather Ray, and his father Bob. Boone goes 1 for 4 and drives in a run in Seattle's 10 - 8 victory.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Faew9doWQAYJI6f?format=png&name=360x360

1999: The Detroit Tigers released Walt McKeel.

2005: Carlos Pe?a hits 2 home runs and an RBI single in the Tigers' 9-5 win over the Blue Jays.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/ECVgZRQX...jpg&name=small

2007: John Smoltz sets the career Atlanta Braves franchise record for strikeouts. He whiffs Mark Reynolds in the 3rd inning of a 6 - 2 win, one of 13 K's on the day as he passes Phil Niekro's old mark of 2,912.

2007: Greg Maddux moves up the historical charts, as he ties Tim Keefe for 9th all-time with 349 wins. He allows one run, two hits and no walks in six innings in a 5 - 3 win over the Astros. Maddux aids his cause with two hits in two at-bats.

2010: The specter of the 2000's steroid scandal is still around. Today, former pitching great Roger Clemens is indicted on six counts of perjury for allegedly lying during Congressional hearings on PED use in February 2008 when he testified that he had never used banned substances. A number of former teammates and associates have since come forward to provide testimony that contradicts his statements made under oath.

2015: In his 1st MLB at-bat, Daniel Norris becomes the first AL pitcher to hit a home run at Wrigley Field. Norris is the first Tigers pitcher with a HR and a walk in the same game since 1970. 15th time that's happened in club history.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/E8hCz3zW...jpg&name=small

2017: Alan Trammell throws out the first pitch at Comerica Park.

2021: The Angels match the biggest comeback in team history when they defeat the Tigers, 13 - 10, at Comerica Park, after trailing 10 - 2 in the 6th. Rookie CF Brandon Marsh is at the center of things with two triples; his first one, in the 2nd, should have been his first career big league homer, as it hits the top of the fence in right field before bouncing back to the field. Television replays clearly show that the ball hit beyond the yellow line demarcating homers, but the Angels fail to ask for a video review and the triple stands.

FIVE FOR FRIDAY.
Totally Tigers

One week after the firing of Tigers? GM, Al Avila, I?m hoping that Chris Ilitch and his senior Front Office executives have been sitting down and compiling a list of qualities, characteristics and skills that their new GM must have.

There?s going to be a lot on their list, some items more important than others.

But do they have a list of priorities? Experience that is a must-have?

I hope so. I certainly have mine.

And it?s a long list.

But what are my top 5 qualifications that absolutely, positively must be met before anything else is considered? The initial 5 that will either qualify or disqualify potential candidates for further evaluation?

You may be surprised that my list of first hurdles is short on the tangible skills. That list comes after candidates have cleared this initial one. And it?s because it doesn?t matter how great your business skills or work experience are, if you can?t prepare the organization to succeed as a whole, then this candidate will ultimately fail. at the task.

Should this person be creative? Yes. A great trader and an expert in understanding how to scout and draft effectively? Absolutely.

But those skills come after they?ve passed the following criteria?..

As if things couldn?t get any worse for the Tigers, manager A.J. Hinch announced this week that outfielder Austin Meadows has once again been pulled from a rehab assignment.

Meadows first hit the injured list back in mid-May due to vertigo-like symptoms and returned a bit less than a month later. That return lasted only eight games, however, before he was placed on the Covid-related injured list.

Just as Meadows was getting ready to head out on a rehab assignment, he was transferred to the 10-day injured list owing to the bizarre diagnosis of an Achilles strain in both legs.

This now marks the second time that Meadows has had a rehab assignment for this injury halted. Hinch?s only update was that Meadows was headed to Detroit for reevaluation and that the Tigers still have hope he can return in 2022.

It?s been a nightmare of a season for Meadows, who has been limited to just 147 plate appearances and seen his power disappear: .250/.347/.328

The Tigers and Angels start their weekend series on Friday night and will play three times before parting ways. The entire series schedule can be seen below:

Detroit Tigers vs. Los Angeles Angels - August 19 at 7:10 pm EST
Detroit Tigers vs. Los Angeles Angels - August 20 at 1:10 pm EST
Detroit Tigers vs. Los Angeles Angels - August 21 at 1:40 pm EST

The Detroit Tigers continue to make national headlines but for all the wrong reasons. Today, a couple articles and MLB Radio posting stories about the vast amount of injuries and surgeries - mostly to pitchers.

It started with Spencer Turnbull, Joey Wentz and then Casey Mize. Followed by Alex Faedo and Kyle Funkhouser. Now Tarik Skubal. 6 pitchers all with surgeries within the past year.

There is concern over Beau Brieske and Matt Manning who also have current arm issues as well. For putting all its rebuilding chips on young pitchers, this threat has the potential to nullify an entire rebuild. Needless to say, this is a top priority for the new GM to resolve.

Big Train is topped in the nightcap when Washington hurler Carl Cashion tosses a 6-inning no-hitter, winning, 2 - 0. The only baserunners reach on two errors by SS George McBride. Johnson's effort takes one hour and 55 minutes, while Cashion's six innings finish in just 65 minutes; the game is called to allow Cleveland to catch a train to Boston. Cashion will win only 11 other games in his major league career.

1915: The White Sox trade for star OF'er Shoeless Joe Jackson from Indians for OF's Braggo Roth & Larry Chappell, RHP Ed Klepfer , & $31,500 (~$850K in 2021).

1921: The Washington Senators selected Donie Bush off waivers from the Detroit Tigers.

1923: A four-piece bat used by Babe Ruth is banned by American League president Ban Johnson because of the glue used on it. A protest is made against the Browns' Ken Williams for using a bat with a wooden plug in it. Johnson rules that all bats must be one piece with nothing added except tape extending to 18 inches up the handle.

1926: The Giants lose their fifth in six games, 6 - 2 in St. Louis. Frankie Frisch misses a sign that costs a run. After the game, berated by John McGraw in front of the team, Frisch buys a ticket to New York and leaves the team. Fined $500, McGraw's favorite, and heir apparent, is through with the Giants.

1931: At St. Louis, Lou Gehrig hits his 33rd homer in the 4th to tie Babe Ruth for the major league lead, but the Babe answers in the 9th with his 34th, a grand slam over the RF roof, to give the Yanks a 7 - 3 win over the Browns. Lefty Gomez almost has New York's first shutout of the season, but he weakens in the 9th.

1933: Powered by Turkey Stearnes' 41st home run, the Chicago American Giants (Negro Leagues) defeat the Nashville Elite Giants in a twin bill for their 28th consecutive victory.

1950: In the 1950 East-West Game, a record four future major leaguers make pitching appearances, throwing 10 of the 18 innings. The West wins, 5 - 3, behind 3 hits, a run, 2 RBI and two steals by Jesse Douglas. In a losing cause, Junior Gilliam homers - he will become the only player to hit homers in both an East-West Game and All-Star Game.

1954: The Detroit Tigers traded Earl Harrist and cash to Seattle (PCL) for Van Fletcher.

1958: Al Kaline belts two 3 run homers with 6 RBI as the Tigers beat the senators 7 - 1.

1960: Ted Williams draws the 2,000th walk of his career in the Red Sox's split of a twi-night doubleheader with Baltimore. Williams joins Babe Ruth as the only batters to collect 2,000 walks. The Splendid Splinter also clouts home runs number 514 and 515 in the game.

1961: Satchel Paige, Roy Campanella & Althea Gibson chat before the East-West Negro League Baseball All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium.

1965: Detroit All-Star SS Dick McAuliffe is lost for the season with a broken bone in his left hand suffered diving into first base, as the 3rd-place Tigers sweep a doubleheader at Boston. The Tigers win 2 - 0 and 3 - 2.

2003: The Detroit Tigers selected John Ennis off waivers from the Atlanta Braves.

2005: Losing to the A's at Oakland's McAfee Coliseum, 4 - 0, the Royals establish a franchise record losing their 19th consecutive game and tie the club's mark by dropping their 12th straight road game. The 38-82 squad needs two more defeats to match the American League record of 21 losses accomplished by the 1988 Orioles, and four more will tie the major league mark of 23 endured by 1961 Phillies.

2006: The Chicago Cubs traded Neifi Perez to the Detroit Tigers for Chris Robinson.

Though the Tigers? 17th shutout loss of the season was their first 1-0 defeat since Sept. 18, 2020, it still followed the general pattern of the 2022 season: Detroit pitchers provide a chance but Tigers hitters can?t take advantage. Considering how many different names have been on the pitching side of the theme, it?s actually encouraging.

While even the hardiest Tigers fan might have a hard time naming all the starters they?ve used since the All-Star break (Manning, Tarik Skubal, Garrett Hill, Michael Pineda, Drew Hutchison, Bryan Garcia, Tyler Alexander, Daniel Norris), their collective 3.09 ERA in that span is the lowest among American League rotations and third lowest in the Majors. Given Detroit?s 8-21 record during that span, it can be depressing to think how much better the Tigers could be with a little more offense.

And yet, as the Tigers try to find a path forward next season, it?s a sliver of hope just how much starting pitching the Tigers have to work with. Even without Skubal, Pineda, Casey Mize, Alex Faedo, Beau Brieske and Eduardo Rodriguez (who returns Sunday), the Tigers continue to pitch stingy.

Last week, Chris Ilitch fired GM Al Avila because he saw ?no progress at the MLB level.? Ilitch had invested $243 mill this year on free agent signings alone because his Front Office had convinced him that the Tigers were within reach of being competitive.

But now the Tigers are once again in last place and the third worst team in MLB. Through Thursday?s games, they are 25 losses away from hitting another 100-loss season. There are 42 games left in the year.

The team added 2 new starting pitchers (free agents) and 5 new positional players. Two rookies were added (positional players) but 1 ended up being sent down. A number of young pitchers saw their debuts in Detroit this year.

While their bullpen has ranked near the top for most of this year, their offensive numbers sit at the bottom of MLB and they are about to set records in fewest number of runs plated. The majority of the positional roster is showing significant performance regression.

Yet the Tigers have been besieged by an astronomical number of injuries, mostly to their pitchers. Three relievers and 3 starting pitchers have now been lost this season to surgery with some of them not expected to pitch at all next year.

The new GM will undoubtedly be taking a deep dive into the status of the Tigers and where they sit in the rebuilding process. Will he continue the rebuilding process or will he be forced to do a reset/reboot? Or, will it be determined that the Tigers have to return to square 1 and rethink the entire process?

What do you think?
What does the new Tigers' GM need to do about the rebuild?

1. Pick up where the organization left off.

2. Reboot/reset some aspects.

3. Develop an entirely new plan.

LHP Eduardo Rodriguez is activated from the restricted list.

RHP Garrett Hill and LHP Daniel Norris will move to the bullpen.

4-man rotation for the immediate future: Matt Manning, Tyler Alexander, Eduardo Rodriguez, Drew Hutchison.

And to think that the starting rotation was originally Rodriguez, Pineda, Mize, Manning and Skubal.

August 20: 2B Jonathan Schoop exits game with right ankle sprain
Schoop appeared to turn his ankle while trying to dance around catcher Max Stassi?s tag as he tried to score from second base on Tucker Barnhart?s second-inning single. Schoop reached out for the ankle after tumbling to the ground and limped back to the dugout, where head athletic trainer Doug Teter accompanied him to the clubhouse. Kody Clemens replaced Schoop at second base for the third inning. The Tigers announced after the game that Schoop is day to day.

Schoop has played in 115 of Detroit?s 122 games this season, eight more than shortstop Javier B?ez for tops on the team. His second-to-home time of 8.04 seconds was slightly faster than his season average, according to Statcast, but right fielder Taylor Ward?s throw beat him with enough time that Stassi was waiting for him at home with the ball.

The Tigers have had nothing but miserable luck on the injury front this year, with just about every starting pitching option spending at least some time on the IL.

Rony Garcia has made 16 appearances for the club this year, with eight of those being starts. However, he might not be able to add to that total, with manager A.J. Hinch telling Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic that Garcia is likely done for the year.
He?s been on the IL since late July due to shoulder soreness, the second time this year a shoulder issue landed him on the shelf. It seems it?s lingering long enough that he might not make it back to the hill this year. If that?s indeed the case, he?ll finish the season with a 4.41 ERA over 51 innings.
