August 27 in Tigers and mlb history:

1901: Cy Young pitches a 15-inning complete game for the Boston Americans in a 2-1 win over the Tigers.

1907: Christy Mathewson fashions a 3-hit shutout over the Cardinals and drives in the only run with a double. Ed Karger takes the hard-luck loss.

1909: The Detroitnews publishes a photo exonerating Ty Cobb in a spiking controversy.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DlD_Sj_W0AUB8hQ.jpg

1911: Chicago's Ed Walsh pitches a 5 - 0 no-hitter against the Red Sox. A 4th-inning walk produces the only Red Sox runner.
After going 18-20 in 1910, Walsh bounces back to win 27 and lead the league in games (56), IP (369), and strikeouts (255).

1912: In response to demands for an alternative way to rate pitchers besides wins and losses, the National League will officially keep ERA's for the first time; the Giants' Jeff Tesreau will lead the league at 1.96. Despite an increase in .300 hitters from 22 to 32 this year, there will be 19 pitchers with ERA's under 3.00. The American League will not make ERA part of its official statistics until 1913.

1915: Detroit sweeps a doubleheader form the yankees 8 - 1, and 11 - 3.
Sam Crawford has 3 hits and 2 RBI in each game of the twin-bill.

1917: At Detroit, Ty Cobb is 3 for 4 to lead the Tigers to a 5 - 1 win over the Red Sox and lefty Babe Ruth.

1918: Christy Mathewson resigns as Reds manager to accept a commission as a captain in the chemical warfare branch of the Army.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/E90CqsyW...jpg&name=large

1919: The Detroit Tigers purchased Sammy Hale from San Antonio (Texas).

1929: Rogers Hornsby has four hits and Sheriff Blake allows six to lead the Cubs to a 4 - 1 win over the Reds. Chicago now leads by 14 1/2 games, the greatest lead a National League team has enjoyed at this stage since the 1906 Cubs.

1935: The Yankees outslug the White Sox, 13 - 10, in the first game of 2. In the second game, Lou Gehrig ties an American League record with five walks as the Yanks lose, 4 - 3.

1938: Joe DiMaggio has three triples in the first game of a doubleheader with Cleveland, an 8 - 7 win in New York. Monte Pearson has a no-hitter in the 2nd game, winning his 10th straight game, 13 - 0. The Yankees, playing their sixth successive doubleheader, increase their lead to 12 games.

1939: In the second 1939 East-West Game, Josh Gibson drives in four and Ed Stone gets three hits to lead a 10-2 rout by the East.

1946: At the Owners' Meeting, a committee formed to study integration, which includes racist Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey, delivers its secretive report defending the covert color barrier which exists in professional baseball. The absurd reasons given why blacks shouldn't be allowed to play in the big leagues include an absence of skills due to inferior training and lack of fundamentals as well as the need to respect existing Negro League contracts, but another lesser known motivation may have been profit, as revealed later in the report: "The Negro leagues rent their parks in many cities from clubs in Organized Baseball (and) Club owners in the major leagues are reluctant to give up revenues amounting to hundreds of thousands of dollars every year" and the fear white fans would be driven away if black players attracted more minorities to the ballpark.

1955: Dodger bonus baby Sandy Koufax fans 14 Redlegs in a 7 - 0 win.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/E9y0-YqV...pg&name=medium

1957: Stan Musial, swinging at a fourth-inning pitch, tears a muscle and chips a bone, ending his consecutive game streak. Four days later he will pinch-run in a game suspended on July 21, officially giving him 895 consecutive games played.

1961: Detroit's Rocky Colavito ties an American League record with four home runs - three in the second game with 6 rbi, in a doubleheader pummeling of the Senators 7 - 4 and 10 - 1 at Washington. Tigers pitcher Don Mossi improves to 14-3 in game 1, and Paul Foytack is the complete game winner in game 2.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CquGSKQX...jpg&name=small

1962: The 36th and last Negro Leagues East-West Game is played in Kansas City's Municipal Stadium. The moribund Negro American League will disband within two months.

1963: Tigers 4 - Angels 1, Al Kaline homers (24th) with 2 RBIs (90 on season). Kaline is unable to finish the season due to ongoing leg issues and is used as a pinch hitter late in the season.
Kaline finishes at .312/.375/.514 and once again finishes 2nd in the MVP vote (1955), and is named the Sporting News American League Player of the Year for the 2nd time (1955) in his legendary career.

1968: Tigers lose on a walk-off single in Chicago, while the Orioles sweep a doubleheader to pull within 4 games in the AL.
It's their slimmest margin since the All-Star Break, but the Tigers will go on to win the pennant by 12 games.

1970: Happy Birthday to Hall of Famer Jim Thome born this day in Peoria, IL.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FbIWpK0UEAEvmmL?format=png&name=240x240
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FbIW5OIUIAYa5Se?format=png&name=360x360

1971: Detroit's Willie Horton is struck in the eye by a pitch from Chicago's Rich Hinton, sidelining him for 28 games. Hinton, in his first major league start, lasts 2 2/3 innings in taking the loss. Joe Coleman wins.

1972: The Tigers' Willie Horton clouts an 11th-inning 2-run home run to beat Minnesota, 5 - 3, in the opener of 2.
In the nightcap, Joe Coleman pitches 11 shutout innings against Minnesota before Aurelio Rodriguez's home run gives him the 1 - 0 win. This is the 3rd win in a row for the Tigers on 11th-inning homers. Rodriguez hit one to start the streak.

1978: The Reds' Joe Morgan belts his 200th homer to become the first player in history to have 200 homers and 500 stolen bases.

1982: Oakland A's legend Rickey Henderson breaks Lou Brock's single-season stolen bases record! Rickey would steal three more bases that night to bring his season total to 122.
https://twitter.com/i/status/1563509422810230785

1984: The Detroit Tigers traded a player to be named later and cash to the Cincinnati Reds for Bill Scherrer. The Detroit Tigers sent Carl Willis (September 1, 1984) to the Cincinnati Reds to complete the trade.

1995: Catcher Mike Piazza collects four long hits - 2 doubles and two home runs, including a grand slam - good for seven ribbies, to lead the Dodgers to a 9 - 1 victory over Philadelphia. Piazza is now hitting .367, tied for the lead in the major leagues.

1996: The Houston Astros traded players to be named later to the Detroit Tigers for Gregg Olson. The Houston Astros sent Kevin Gallaher (minors) (August 27, 1996) and Pedro Santana (August 27, 1996) to the Detroit Tigers to complete the trade.

1999: Major league umpires are warned by the league presidents that they will be fired if they strike next week. There has been talk of a strike over baseball's refusal to allow 22 umpires to withdraw their resignations, which are effective on September 2nd.

2003: The Detroit Tigers released Steve Sparks.

2005: Jeff Kent becomes the first player to hit 300 homers as a second baseman. The Dodger infielder, who surpassed Ryne Sandberg's total of 277 last September, is the major league leader at this position with Joe Gordon holding the American League record with 246.

2007: Tigers blast the Yankees 16-0. Justin Verlander holds New York to 3 hits in 7 innings. Placido Polanco goes 3-for-5 with a home run.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Ega_JsMW...jpg&name=small
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EC6-66RX...g&name=360x360

2011: Justin Verlander does not pitch one of his better starts, giving up four runs, including a pair of solo homers to Luke Hughes and Jason Repko, and leaves after giving up his second hit of the day to Drew Butera, who is hitting well below the Mendoza Line, with no out in the 6th, but his teammates pick him up and he gets credit for the Tigers' 6 - 4 win over the Twins.
This makes him the major leagues' first 20-game winner this year, the first in the majors to reach the mark in August since Curt Schilling did it with Arizona in 2002, and the first for the Tigers since Bill Gullickson in 1990.
Jose Valverde picks up the save with a perfect 9th inning. He has now converted 40 straight save opportunities over two seasons, tying Dennis Eckersley for the second-longest streak in American League history, but still 14 behind Tom Gordon's record of 54.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CquKbVeX...jpg&name=small

2014: David Price of the Tigers has a historically bad outing in a start against the Yankees. In the 3rd inning, he allows a base hit to the first 9 batters he faces before being lifted; he is the first pitcher to allow 9 straight hits since Bob Forsch on August 3, 1989, and ends up allowing 8 earned runs on 12 hits in only 2 innings, something accomplished by only three other pitchers before him. For their part, the Yankees fall one shy of the American League record for consecutive hits as they win, 8 - 4.

2015: Arbitrator Fredric Horowitz rules against Barry Bonds in his claim that teams colluded to keep him out of the game after he broke the all-time home run record in 2007.

2018: The Detroit Tigers released Nick Tepesch.

2020: Another seven major league games are postponed on the second day of protests across the sports world against police brutality and racism, following the postponement of three games yesterday. The most poignant moment takes place at Citi Field where players from the Mets and Marlins take their position on the field, observe a 42-second moment of silence in memory of Jackie Robinson, then walk off as Marlins OF Lewis Brinson drapes a "Black Lives Matter" tee-shirt over home plate.

2021: The Detroit Tigers released Renato Nunez.

2021: In the 60 plus years since expansion, no player in history had ever hit a pinch-hit inside-the-park home run to give his team the lead.
Then Victor Reyes steps up in a 1-1 game in the 8th against the Blue Jays.

SATURDAY SURVEY.
Totally Tigers

Over the winter, the Detroit Tigers signed pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez to a 5-year $77 million contract. The intent was to make him the #1 starting pitcher in the rotation.

Until this week, Rodriguez had pitched in only 8 games. His last start was in mid-May and afterwards he went on the IL. Shortly thereafter, he took Restricted Leave (forfeiting pay and service time) and ghosted the team for over a month.

In his return, he addressed his teammates and the media but revealed very little outside of the clubhouse. We did learn that he sought professional help while he was away.

Eduardo will be with Detroit longer than most of the current roster. His contract expires after the 2026 season.

Many have criticized him for not getting in touch with the Tigers or returning any phone calls. This caused the Tigers to wonder about their future, how to
re-design the rotation and how all of this may impact their pitching prospects.

Yet others argue that personal lives can be complicated at times and that people should not judge those issues.

How do you feel? Has your opinion of Rodriguez changed? Is all forgiven or is there still some lingering doubt or resentment?

How do you feel about Eduardo Rodriguez now that he has returned to the team?

1. All is forgiven.

2. A few lingering feelings.

3. Still feeling unhappy with him.

Poor strike zone judgment continues to torpedo Baez's first season in Detroit.

The numbers are alarming and mind-boggling. According to FanGraphs, of the 1,630 pitches Baez has seen this season (before Saturday), only 34% have been inside the strike zone. Meaning, 66% of the pitches thrown to him are balls.
And yet, his walk rate is among the lowest in baseball (4.4%) and his chase rate is among the highest (46%).

August 28 in Tigers and mlb history:

1907: Highlander pitcher Tex Neuer, begins baseball's most successful short career by besting the Red Sox 1 - 0 in his first start, the nitecap of a doubleheader. In one month he will pitch six complete games, win 4, including three shutouts, and then disappear from the ML scene.
In the first game, Boston's Cy Young wins his 20th game, defeating the Highlanders, 5 - 3.

1908: The Senators give some support to Walter Johnson, scoring eight runs against Cleveland to win 8 - 0. Johnson's last outing was a 1 - 0 loss to the Tigers on the 24th.

1909: In the first of two games at South Side Park, Dolly Gray of Washington enters the record book by walking eight White Sox in the 2nd inning, with seven of the walks in a row (both ML records). The six runs scored are enough for a 6 - 4 Chicago win, although they manage only one hit against Dolly. Leading off the 2nd, Patsy Dougherty logs the only hit, and when he bats again in the inning, manager Billy Sullivan suggests he go to the plate without a bat. For Dougherty, this is the third of four times he'll have the only hit in a game.

1913: Walter Johnson's 14-game winning streak is ended, although it takes Boston 11 innings to beat him 1 - 0. Boston manages a 2nd-inning single by Steve Yerkes and doesn't have another baserunner until Yerkes singles again in the 11th, and reaches third as the ball goes through the legs of CF Clyde Milan. A fielder's choice and a single win it. Johnson strikes out 10, including five in a row, and walks none.

1918: Tris Speaker is suspended for the remainder of the season because of his assault on umpire Tom Connolly following a dispute at home plate in a game in Philadelphia.

1921: Despite three doubles by Babe Ruth, the Tigers drop the Yankees 7 - 3. Ruth starts a record streak in which he gets at least one extra-base hit in nine straight games. Tigers stars of the game are CF Ty Cobb, LF Bobby Veach, and P Bert Cole.
Ruth starts a record streak in which he gets at least one extra-base hit in nine straight games. Into the record books to go with his 119 extra-base hits, 177 runs, and 457 total bases. His .846 slugging average is one point behind that of a year ago.

1924: Despite Babe Ruth's two home runs, the Senators beat the Yankees 11 - 6 and move into first place. The Yankees will tie them for two days in September, but otherwise the Senators stay on top till the end.

1932: Due to the anticipation of an eclipse, the Red Sox complete a game several days earlier than scheduled with the Indians and beat the Tribe in 11 innings, 4 - 3. Three days later, Fenway Park goes dark for twenty minutes during the solar event.

1936: The Giants win their 15th in a row, beating Pittsburgh 7 - 4 in 14 innings. First base coach Bill Terry inserts himself as a pinch hitter and delivers a bases-loaded single to break the 1 - 1 tie in the 14th. The streak will be stopped the next day by Red Lucas.

1938: On Connie Mack Day at Shibe Park, the A's win a doubleheader from the White Sox, setting a league record by playing their seventh successive twin bill in 8 days.

1940: Homestead Grays (Negro League) P Ray Brown earns his 27th consecutive victory over a 2-year span when he shuts out the Baltimore Elite Giants 5 - 0 on a 3-hitter. The win raises his record to 12-0 for the season.

1941: Ted Williams goes 2-for-3 against the Tigers to raise his average to .407 but the Tigers win 8 - 7. Rudy York with the home run and 4 RBI.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Cq-L8ZZW...pg&name=medium

1945: HOF Jackie Robinson met face-to-face with Brooklyn Dodgers President Branch Rickey for hours which led to signing his groundbreaking baseball contract.

1950: At Fenway Park the Red Sox come back from 10 - 0 and 12 - 1 deficits to beat the Indians 15 - 14. Bob Feller is the loser, this time in his only relief appearance of the season, coming in for starter Bob Lemon, the American League's winningest pitcher. Dom DiMaggio's two triples and a single pace the offense. It is the second day in a row the Tribe has blown a big lead, losing a seven run advantage yesterday.

1950: At Wrigley Field, Hank Sauer socks three consecutive home runs off Curt Simmons, as the Cubs edge the Phillies 7 - 5 in game 1. Sauer will connect for three homers off Simmons once more, in 1952.

1950: Earle and Roy Mack, Connie's sons by his first marriage, purchase 54 percent interest in the Athletics from Connie Mack, Jr., their younger brother from a second marriage. Earle, Roy and Connie Mack now own 1,198 shares out of 1,500. "As long as dad wants to manage," the two announce, "he will continue to manage."

1951: The Braves sell P Johnny Sain to the Yankees for $50,000 and a young pitcher named Lew Burdette. It is another late-season insurance measure for the New Yorkers.

1958: White Sox 2B Nellie Fox sets a record for consecutive games without striking out (98).
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/E94sAJXX...jpg&name=small

1961: At Washington, Rocky Colavito and Al Kaline belt 1st-inning homers as Detroit wins 7 - 3 to cut New York's lead to 1 1/2 games. Rocky now has 39 homers and 120 RBIs. Jake Wood hits a 6th inning grand slam to complete the scoring for Detroit.

1964: Norm Cash hits a home run and a double. Tigers score 6 in the first inning and beat the Angels 12-1.

1968: Tigers beat the angels 6 - 1. Denny McLain becomes the first American League pitcher to win 26 games since Bob Feller and Hal Newhouser both did it in 1946.

1969: Detroit OF Jim Northrup goes 6 for 6, as the Tigers beat the A's 5 - 3. Northrup's 6th hit is a home run over the roof in the bottom of the 13th to win the game. The first 6-hit game for Detroit since June 24 1962, when the Tigers hitter with a 6 hit game was Rocky Colavito with seven hits in a 22 inning marathon.

1969: At a press conference, Commissioner Bowie Kuhn announces the publication of The Baseball Encyclopedia and holds up a copy of the 6 1/2 pound book.

1970: The Giants' Juan Marichal beats the Pirates 5 - 1 for his 200th ML win. Marichal joins Jim Bunning as the only active pitchers with 200 wins.

1970: Tigers suspend Denny McLain for 30 days after he dumps ice water over sportswriters from the Detroit Free Press and News in the Tiger Stadium clubhouse.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DlXv_GRXcAAGerS.jpg

1971: Les Cain becomes the last Tigers pitcher to hit a home run before the adoption of the designated hitter in the Tigers 5 - 4 win over the white sox.

1978: The Mariners and Red Sox combine for 16 extra-base hits in the Red Sox's 10 - 9 victory. The Sox, down 9 - 7 in the 9th, start a rally when Fred Lynn lines his 5th hit of the game. Lynn scores on an error and Butch Hobson drives home the winner with a 2-run double. Jim Rice hits his 34th homer, Jack Brohamer adds four hits, and Bob Stanley wins his 12th against one loss. The Sox lose Dwight Evans in the 7th when he is beaned by a Mike Parrott pitch, but X-Rays show no fracture however.

1984: Tigers win over the mariners 5 - 4 on Ruppert Jones' go-ahead RBI double with 2 outs in the 9th.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EC_X9vAX...pg&name=medium

1987: Mike Schmidt continues to climb baseball's all-time home run list, passing both Ted Williams and Willie McCovey with the 522nd of his career in an 8 - 1 win over San Diego.

1988: The Detroit Tigers signed Shawn Hare as an amateur free agent.

1993: The Detroit Tigers signed Mike Gardiner as a free agent.
1993: The Detroit Tigers traded Ron Rightnowar to the Milwaukee Brewers for a player to be named later. The Milwaukee Brewers sent Nikco Riesgo (December 14, 1993) to the Detroit Tigers to complete the trade.

1996: Vinny Castilla reaches the 100-RBI plateau, joining teammates Andres Galarraga, Ellis Burks, and Dante Bichette. Not since the Cubs and Phillies of 1929 has a team had four players reach the mark.

2000: The Players' association exercises its option to extend the Collective bargaining agreement, ensuring labor peace through October 31, 2001. The expected move comes as no surprise as the players appear to be happy with the November 1996 deal, but the owners have expressed concerns the present CBA has widened the talent gap between the high and low-revenue markets due to escalating salaries.

2001: Seattle OF Ichiro Suzuki reaches 200 hits for the season as the Mariners fall to the Devil Rays, 6 - 0. By going 2 for 3, Suzuki becomes only the third American League rookie to reach 200 hits since 1964.

2016: Miguel Cabrera ties Al Kaline with 972 career extra-base hits, now 44th all-time in major league history with a double in a loss to the angels.

2020: Because Jackie Robinson Day, normally celebrated on April 15th, was shut out by the Coronavirus pandemic this year, it is rescheduled today, on the anniversary of Martin Luther King's March on Washington. It takes place amidst nationwide questioning on racial relations, following the brutal shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, WI earlier in the week, and the Astros and Athletics elect not to play, staging instead a brief ceremony in Robinson's honor, following in the steps of other MLB teams and other sports who have done the same over the past two days. The producers of the film 42 had made a $4.2 million donation of medical equipment for the African-American community on the original day, but today everyone is saddened upon hearing of the passing at 43 of actor Chadwick Boseman, who portrayed Jackie Robinson in the 2013 film.

2021: The Detroit Tigers released Erasmo Ramirez.

DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Totally Tigers

It appears that the Tigers will most probably finish the year as MLB?s 3rd worst team. And as such, they would be guaranteed to be in the running for 1 of the top 3 draft picks under the new CBA rules.

The team remains at the bottom of the AL Central with a record of 47-77.

There are 38 games remaining in the season (through). The team has the chance to lose another 100+ games before the end of 2022.

Yet, the Tigers are trying to prepare as much as possible for next year.
They need to have extended looks at some prospects as well as whittle down the 40-man roster so as to protect the right players from leaving to go elsewhere.

Once September call-ups happen, should the team play the prospects as much as possible? Benching the regulars more often?

Or should they attempt to play their very best for the rest of the year and hopefully avoid that dreaded 3-figure loss number?

Today?s blog addresses this dilemma and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

For this one blog only, you?ve got 6 sentences max to share your thoughts.
Of course, you can respond to as many other readers as you want.

TT will supply the ammunition. One thought-provoking question. Several options provided. One hard choice to be selected. One vote.
Ready?

What should the Tigers' priority be for the rest of the year?

1. Play the prospects as much as possible.

2. Play that roster/lineup that will win more games.

Miller Huggins suspends Ruth and slaps a $5,000 fine on him for disobeying orders on the field and team rules off the field. The day after his return to the lineup, Ruth will hit home run number 300.

Mickey Mantle hits home run number 447 in the opener and ties Babe Ruth's career strikeout record (1,330) in the nightcap.

1965: Giants centerfielder Willie Mays breaks former Pirate Ralph Kiner's record for home runs in the month of August when the "Say Hey Kid" connects for his 17th round tripper in an 8 - 3 victory over the Mets.

Al Kaline has 3 walks and scores 2 runs, as McLain wins his 17th in game 1, Bill Freehan with the 2 run homer in game 2.

1968: Denny McLain became the first American League pitcher to win 26 games since Bob Feller and Hal Newhouser both did it in 1946 as he pitched the Tigers to a 6-1 victory over the California Angels. With Baltimore's 3-2 loss to the Senators, the Detroit AL lead is back to 5 games.

2022: Aaron Judge of the Yankees hit home run #50 of the season, to stay just ahead of the pace set by Roger Maris when he hit 61 homers to set the team and American League record in 1961. However, it is the Angels' Shohei Ohtani who hits the biggest blast of the night, a two-run shot off Frankie Montas in the 5th, his 29th, to give L.A. a 4 - 3 win over New York.
