Justin Verlander continues his Dominance.
from stats and info at espn

Verlander reached 19 wins in 127 team games, the fastest a Tigers pitcher has gotten to 19 wins since Mickey Lolich reached 19 wins in 114 team games in 1972 with a four man rotation.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Verlander is 18-0 this season when the Tigers have scored at least three runs in his starts.
Verlander joins Greg Maddux and Pedro Martinez as the only pitchers in the Divisional Era to post a WHIP under 0.90 (minimum 20 decisions).

Picked up this tidbit, thought it was fun :)

- About three hours before the St. Louis Cardinals' game Sunday night, Tony La Russa sat in the tiny manager's office in the visitors clubhouse watching the end of the Cleveland Indians-Detroit Tigers game, pausing in his responses to follow the action. When a fly ball was lifted toward center field with one out in the ninth inning and Austin Jackson set himself to make a throw home in an effort to cut off the tying run, La Russa's voice began to rise -- and when the runner was called out, La Russa shouted and reached for his cellphone, dialing the number of Tigers manager Jim Leyland. "He won't answer," said La Russa, who left a message for his good friend.

August 23 in Tigers history :

1916: Ty Cobb goes from first to third on a teammate's single to LF, then swipes home when A's 3B Charlie Pick holds the ball. Detroit wins, 10 - 3.

1962: Steve Boros matches the American League record for most errors in an inning by a 3B with 4, but Detroit beats Cleveland, 8 - 5 as Al Kaline hits two home runs in a bittersweet season, that started with leading the league in the Triple Crown race, only to break his collarbone in a game saving catch late May and miss nearly two months. Kaline will hit 29 homeruns on the season in exactly 100 games played.

2000: At Comerica Park, fans flee their seats as swarms of small insects invade the stands during the first inning. The six-legged pests do not affect the players, and the game continues uninterrupted with the Tigers edging the Mariners 6 - 5.

Win puts Justin Verlander just one win from milestone.
from the freep

Justin Verlander won his 19th game Monday in his 28th start; it's the seventh time a Tiger has won that many in a season in the past 30 seasons. Here's how many starts it took the other six to do so, and how many wins they ended up with:
Verlander 2009,
Gullickson 1991,
Morris 1983, 1984, 1986,
Petry 1983.

First Pitch : Can Justin Verlander carry Tigers to pennant?
from usatoday

Verlander's body of work -- a 19-5 record, a 2.28 ERA, a .88 WHIP and an absurd .188 opponents' batting average -- has rendered the rest of the Cy Young field moot, and the Tigers have seized a 5 1/2 game lead on the fading Cleveland Indians and Chicago White Sox.

Not once since divisional play began has a team won a pennant when the club's No. 2 starter had an earned-run average two runs or worse than the No. 1 starter.
