Game 11: Detroit Tigers @ Pittsburgh Pirates 12:35 EST 4/9

Conversely, bad defense hurt the Pirates. Overthrows, and half-hearted attempts to snag an overhead floater. #25 needs to leave his feet on that flair from Carpenter. And sprint to the ball first. He did neither thing.
Feels good to be in the good side of a game like that for once.

WATERCOOLER WEDNESDAY.
Totally Tigers

The hottest trend in home run celebrations (or “celly” as the players call them) continues to survive into the new season. It is when players use designated props in their dugout to celebrate a HR being hit.
Last year, the Tigers’ celly was donning a Red Wings helmet, grabbing a hockey stick and make a shot into a net. This year, it’s a spear with 3 faux pepperoni pizzas on top just like the Little Caesar’s logo.
How the Tigers came up with this year’s version and the strategy behind it can be read in yesterday’s blog.

The Tigers’ are MLB’s only team to not have their celly tied to their name, the city of Detroit or the Michigan region. Approximately one-third of teams refuse to introduce a dugout celebration.
So what do you think of the Tigers’ 2024 version with the spear and pizza?

What do you think about the Tigers' newest HR celebration?

1. It's a fun and smart marketing move.

2. It's boring.

3. It's tacky.

4. It's stupid.

Not sure what to think. Sometimes it’s all of the answers. I’d like to see a nice bat flip. Maybe get a team mad at us . Heck idk.

Why do they need anything. Hit a HR, run the bases - some high 5's and sit your ass down.
Like Al Kaline . Game # 6 of the 1968 World Series. Smashed first pitch. Harry Caray on the tv broadcast calls it. He runs the bases shakes a hand and sits down! Man baseball history is great. Come on Tigers get your shit together and get back into the playoffs.

Seeing that video of my hero brings tears of joy to my eyes and a heart filled with Tigers memories of days gone by.

These marketing ploys, first with last years hockey helmet and stick, and now this year with the pizza spear is just all marketing like you said, and so full of shit. Teams with more class and values are probably laughing at the team with this money gimmick. While he has spent money in many departments we don't think of like upgrading the minor league teams in scouting coaches and development they are not spending on this team other than low to middle tier free agents and bargain basement 1 year fill in players. Look at what has happened to the shortstop position, all of a sudden through injuries they have no one but Baez, wtf?? .....

and what Scott Harris said about not wanting to block a young player, well most of these young players are not hitting. They are either not following the coaches advice, or going outside for hitting advice like Kerry Carpenter did last year.

while the position does need to be addressed, it isn't as dire as she says. The bottom line is we are stuck with Biaz and if he is hurt, McKinstry is fine defensively. Hell, that is probably an upgrade offensively!

Act like you've been there before. Get around the bases quickly and get to the bench. If the team should react in anyway, it should be with The Silent Treatment. Ownership can cast the die, proscribe silly "cellys" and, were I the owner of the Tigers, I'd do so and levy fines for "cellys" (I HATE THAT TERM), MLBPA be damned.

I feel so fortunate for having seen Kaline play in person many times from 1966-1974.

I wonder how it works for a starting pitcher like Manning when it comes to his pay. He is signed to a 1 year $740K contract. Is that what he makes if he is playing for Toledo or the Tigers, or does he make more when he is up with the team? I don't really understand the way it works when they go up and down between the two teams.

Depends if they're under contract. Manning gets 740k regardless where he's at.
