Detroit Tigers vs. Toronto Blue Jays, at Comerica Park, July 15, 2017 Matchups, Tickets, Preview.
Baseball Reference
Tigers starter Michael Fulmer was invited to his first All-Star Game appearance last week. Because he pitched last Sunday in Cleveland, he was not eligible to pitch in the game and was replaced on the official roster.
Fulmer is making just his second career appearance against the Blue Jays. He allowed only two hits in six scoreless innings in the Tigers' 11-0 win at Comerica Park on June 6 of last year.
Toronto starter Francisco Liriano, now 33 and in his 12th season in baseball, achieved his 100th career win earlier this year. He's 4-6 with a 5.25 ERA in 14 career appearances at Comerica Park, most of which came when pitched for the Minnesota Twins.
Miguel Cabrera (9-for-36 with three home runs, two doubles and 10 walks) and Victor Martinez (13-for-31 with a home run and six doubles) have hit well against Liriano. Justin Upton is 1-for-13 with five strikeouts, although his only hit is a home run.
The Tigers opened the second half of their season with a 7-2 loss to the Blue Jays on Friday night.
Over the last six seasons (2011-2016), the Tigers have the fifth-best winning percentage among MLB teams after the All-Star break (238-192, .553).
Only the Dodgers (.586), Cardinals (.572), Nationals (.561) and Rangers (.560) are better.
The only season in which the Tigers did not post a winning record after the break was 2015.
Three things to know for the game:
Darwin Barney and Kendrys Morales are a combined 6-for-12 (.500) off Fulmer. The rest of Toronto's lineup is 1-for-12 (.083). No Blue Jays player has recorded an extra-base hit or an RBI against Fulmer.
Liriano is throwing his two-seam fastball less this year, but opponents are still hitting for power against it. Liriano threw his two-seamer almost 50 percent of the time in 2016 and garnered a .517 slugging percentage against, according to Statcast, versus about 32 percent this year and a .621 slugging percentage.
Toronto is one of the few teams to hold Miguel Cabrera in check, especially in recent years.
Since 2011, Cabrera is 27-for-130 (.208) with eight extra-base hits in 35 games against the Blue Jays.
