ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions are exploring every option to fill their sudden needs at cornerback.

Yes, that means working out an aging Champ Bailey.

And yes, on Wednesday, that means working out Dimitri Patterson -- who is best known for getting released by the New York Jets after disappearing during training camp in August.

But beggars can't be choosers, and the Lions are beggars when it comes to filling out a roster in the secondary. Coach Jim Caldwell said the Lions are keeping all options, including the 36-year-old Bailey, open.

"We haven't ruled out anything, or made any promises to anybody," he said moments after Patterson's workout. "We're constantly looking to try to obviously improve our situation."

Patterson worked out with the Lions this afternoon, and the sense of urgency was evident. It appeared the bulk of the front office was on hand for the workout, including general manager Martin Mayhew, team president Tom Lewand and senior personnel executive Brian Xanders.

A team official staked out the session to shoo away any onlookers who might pass by the indoor practice field. Later, a gaggle of players gathered near a window to watch the workout.

While the Lions regularly host free agents throughout the season, this sight was unusual and spoke to the difficult situation facing Detroit in just the second week of the season.

The Lions have only four healthy cornerbacks, after beginning the season with just five -- one fewer than normal -- and then placing starter Bill Bentley on injured reserve with a torn ACL.

Bentley suffered the injury in the season opener against the New York Giants. Rookie fourth-rounder Nevin Lawson finished the game in his place.

Lawson could end up being Detroit's starting nickel, at least in the interim, but the team still needs at least one more body just to field a team, plus could be looking for possible upgrades.

For as steady as Lawson looked against New York, tougher challenges await, and it's unclear whether Detroit wants to make a playoff push with a starting nickelback who was not expected to play a significant role on defense this year.

"A little wide-eyed, but he settled in and didn't bust any coverages," cornerback Rashean Mathis said of Lawson's debut. " And that's the main thing. If you don't bust any coverages, you give yourself a chance to compete."

Let's see. The Jets...who may have a worse secondary than the Lions cut him. I think not!

Cuz he went crazy...not cuz of talent. Or maybe he just wanted to get away from the jets. We have a depleted secondary, if this guy just needs a fresh start, why not with the Lions?

On August 2, 2011, Patterson signed with the Cleveland Browns. Patterson had success for the Browns as a nickel back which prompted the Browns to re-sign him to a multi-year contract. On December 17, 2012, the Cleveland Browns released him.
Miami Dolphins[edit]

Patterson was claimed off waivers by the Miami Dolphins on December 18, 2012.[1] He was released by the Dolphins on the day before free agency began on March 10, 2014.[2]
New York Jets[edit]

Patterson was signed by the New York Jets on April 1, 2014.[3] On August 25, Patterson was suspended indefinitely by the Jets after leaving the team without contacting the organization.[4] He was released on August 30, 2014.[5]

He got hurt in Miami. AWOL for the Jets but says he talked to them.

Didn't work out in Cleveland.

I would rather have Champ but Patteson fits the nickel better

Whoa, think you copy and pasted a bit too much.

Suh has a value equal to entire Super Bowl secondaries...we're fine regardless of whom they put back there.

The fact they even worked out Dmitry Patterson (who?) when Champ is sitting there by the phone says everything you need to know about how the Lions feel about Boss's brother!
