Totally Tigers

Before we get into today?s poll, a quick reminder to post your ?Mt. Rushmore? of Tiger players to yesterday?s blog. Today is the last day and results will be published early next week. Here?s the link:

Recently, the students in a class at Monmouth University were given the task of developing an argument to support MLB?s recognition of Armando Galarraga?s perfect game. A game, as you may remember, that had its designation voided because of a blown call in the 9th inning with 2 outs.

After intensive research and study, the class came to the near-unanimous conclusion that Galarraga should be awarded perfect game status. They compiled a thick binder of arguments and evidence and sent it to Commissioner Rob Manfred.

Many within baseball feel that Armando should be retroactively awarded perfect game status. Even the umpire who made the call said he was wrong.

But others, like Jim Leyland (who went on the record about this case), are against changing the record books. This, despite the fact that records have been changed in the past ? most notably the George Brett pine tar incident.

What should MLB do about Galarraga?s perfect game?

What should MLB do about Galarraga's perfect game?

1. Keep the ruling as is - no perfect game.

2. Change the ruling so Galarraga is credited with a perfect game.

Today we talk about the similarities and differences between the 2003 Tigers and the 2019 Tigers (shoutout Dmitri Young) and then we talk about where Detroit's bullpen ranks against the rest of the AL Central division.

What Team Had the Lowers Power-Speed # since 1920?
Cybermetrics

I thought about this because the Tigers came into today with only 20 HRs, last in the AL by 5 while also being last in SBs with just 6, by 4.

Here is what Baseball Reference says about Power-Speed #

"2 x (Home Runs x Stolen Bases)/(Stolen Bases + Home Runs) The harmonic mean of HR and SB. To do well you need a lot of both. Developed by Bill James."

Using Stathead, I called up all the teams who had both 50 or less HRs & SBs then all the teams with 20 or fewer HRs then all the teams with 20 or fewer SBs. It will probably be one of those teams. I just have not done the math yet. I only looked teams with 100+ games in a season (team Power-Speed # is not directly searchable in Stathead).
