How many of you return a day or two later to check the final results of our weekly polls?

We really have an excellent cross-section of fans and historically, this group of readers almost always tend to be spot on about what they see happening with the Tigers. I am hoping that those with offices at Comerica read what the fans are saying and consider it when they are discussing strategy.

As background, each poll is carefully constructed, offering the full spectrum of options as well as avoiding the possibility of leading readers to a specific answer. And they are also tamper-proof. Unlike the All-Star voting, it?s 1 reader, 1 vote. The blog platform kicks out any additional votes submitted by a reader who has already voted once.

Let?s now take the time to review all of the major polls completed in February. What you may find most interesting is the often-seen difference between how the overall population of fans feel compared to the published reader comments. Sometimes, the most vocal of fans are in the minority. Some of you may be surprised at what you see.

What is also fun to discover is how far apart ? or how close ? fans are in voting.

As you peruse the questions, it may also be interesting to see how often you were in the majority ? or in the minority. This blog has always been about exploring baseball more deeply and being receptive to different theories and opinions. Where one stands in each of these polls is a great way to expand one?s thinking about the game.

Here are the questions, with the winner and percentage listed at the top in bold.

New to the Tigers radio team is Bobby Scales, who will call a portion of road games alongside Dan Dickerson. His first game is today, airing on 1270 AM.
The broadcast is also available on the Audacy and MLB apps.

As a former player, farm director, and field coordinator, Scales brings a diverse range of perspectives to the broadcast booth. He?s a native of Southfield, and played collegiately at the University of Michigan.

Today, another opportunity for readers to discuss the hottest topics in a forum where thoughtful dialog and a variety of opinions are welcomed.

Let?s create some running conversational threads. And for those of you back in actual offices, here?s a question to take with you ? or use via Zoom ? as you talk to your co-workers.

Here is today?s topic??..

There is an upheaval in the sports broadcasting industry going on. Times are changing and the corporations that broadcast games are finding that televised baseball games are no longer profitable to them.

This is best exemplified by what is going on with the Diamond Sports Group which owns Bally Sports Detroit. Diamond is expected to declare bankruptcy within days.

Is it believed that Diamond will try to re-negotiate the contracts it has with over 14 MLB teams (and there are hockey and basketball contracts, too). It is also believed that Diamond will simply walk away from approximately 6 teams, leaving those fans without a way of watching their teams. The Tigers are not expected to be one of those organizations.

These broadcast contracts are one of the biggest revenue streams for baseball teams. The loss of these contracts will deliver a major hit to many of these MLB organizations. (Keep in mind that Bally also broadcasts the Red Wings games which means the Ilitch family will take a double hit.)

The reasons for the recent decline of regional sports networks are many. For Diamond, part of it was industry consolidation that involved both Disney and Fox Sports. But also, lower viewer numbers. Lastly, the change from satellite/cable to the ability to stream games from anywhere and anytime has more and more people cutting the cord.

In all cases, every baseball team that is part of Bally will take a hit. For those teams who will be left high and dry, MLB plans on stepping in to broadcast their games until they are able to renegotiate contracts.

How do you watch the Tigers? What are your thoughts about your options for watching games?

How do you currently watch the Tiger games?

1. Bally Sports Detroit

2. MLB.tv

3. National tv networks

4. Other streaming apps like Apple, YouTube, etc.

5. Don't watch the games.

SATURDAY SURVEY.

Last week, the Tigers and Bally Sports experimented with a new broadcast formula. Instead of Matt Shepard (?the call?) and C-Mo (?the color?), they presented a ?players only? format with C-Mo, Todd Jones and Dan Petry.

Instead of the structured broadcast that is generally used, all 3 players were allowed an open format to talk whenever they wished ? and about anything they wanted.

Whether you saw the 2 broadcasts or not, what are your feelings about watching a different kind of broadcast play out? Do you prefer something that is structured and plays out according to what is going on during the game or do you like something more informal in which everyone talks when they choose and they pick their own topics that may not directly reflect upon the game on the field?

Which format would you select? (And no, you can?t take the easy way out and say you want neither.

Which broadcast format do you prefer to watch?

1. Prefer structured Shepard/C-MO style.

2. Prefer informal multiple ?players only? format.

Back in 2019, the Detroit Tigers hired Matt Shepard to replace Mario Impemba and Rod Allen, who were fired after the infamous altercation in September 2018.

The 2023 season found Shepard continuing his job for the 5th year but with a slight tweaking of the other on-air talent. Jack Morris is gone and Craig Monroe was promoted to take his place. Fans also saw Todd Jones, Kirk Gibson, Dan Petry and Cameron Maybin help with the broadcasts.

It is standard for broadcast organizations to hire the talent but it is almost always done with the recommendations and approval by the team itself.
It?s essentially a joint hire.

As a Tigers fan, how would you grade the tv broadcast team?

Let us know how you feel about the current group. Tomorrow, we?ll have Part 2 of our survey and ask readers who they would prefer to have instead if they feel the current broadcasters are lacking. Please save those suggestions for Sunday.

How would you grade the current tv broadcasters for Bally Sports?

How would you grade the current Tigers tv broadcast crew for Bally Sports?

1. Excellent

2. Good

3. OK

4. Poor

5. Unwatchable

Yesterday, we asked readers to grade the current Bally Sports tv crew. Final results may be seen by scrolling down this page to yesterday?s blog.

Today, we want to ask readers to assemble their preferred tv broadcast crew. You can pick someone currently part of the tv team, other Tigers, broadcasters from other teams or even media types who cover baseball.

We ask that you submit no more than 3 names in your list.

As an added bonus, if you like and approve of someone else?s list, please hit the ?like? button. Make sure to come back later today and review submissions made after your initial visit so everyone?s answers get equal viewing.

Within the coming week, we?ll assemble the most popular combinations and report back with the final results.

For today only, comments may be expanded to 6 sentences.

5 seasons already? Never liked him but I worry about who they replace him with. And I hope next season they don't have the former Tigers, C-Mo for one.
