This is the NHL, 4th best. Lottery there's a 49.4% we finish will a top 3 selection. More teams than not who had the worst record failed to get top pick. That's why tanking never works because it's a long shot we come away with the one.

Wouldn't go as far as saying tanking never works.

Look at Toronto as an example.

The lottery gives tanking a minor disincentive, it obviously doesn't prevent teams from not doing it.

Detroit keeping Blashill around is a perfect example of intentionally tanking.
