Random Red Wings Notes

January 17, 1951 - On ?Maurice Richard Night? in Montreal, Gordie Howe scores the 100th goal of his NHL career.

January 17, 1960 - Gordie Howe scores two goals and records an assist and passes Maurice ?Rocket? Richard for most points in NHL history, with 950.
Howe is only 31 when he passes Richard, who is playing his final season with Montreal.

January 17, 1996 - Steve Yzerman scores the 500th goal of his career in a game against the Colorado Avalanche with Patrick Roy in the net. The Wings win the contest, 3-2.

Though Detroit is having a rough season, the youth carrying the team has been a positive sign. Allen writes that the production from ?kids? Anthony Mantha, Andreas Athanasiou, Xavier Ouellet, and Jared Coreau has gone a long way in breathing some life into what?s been a stale season in Hockeytown.
It also shows that Detroit has continued to draft talent that can produce at the NHL level.
Though the playoffs could be missed, a silver lining is certainly the development and contribution from the younger players.
Allen notes that while the Red Wings have struggled to score goals this season, it?s been the emergence of Mantha and Athanasiou that have given Detroit an uptick in scoring.
More interesting, will be if the Red Wings continue to rely on their youth, with a roster and philosophy that always seem to favor veterans.

Should the Detroit Red Wings make a coaching change?

Disagree heavily with the article.

Personally I believe that Blashill should stay in charge of the team. He has really good assistant coaches in Doug Houda and John Torchetti. The coaching staff is not at fault for the way the team is performing.
The coaching staff determines the powerplay setup and break in. The Wings PP have been useless at breaking into opposition zone and maintaining any pressure. The failure of the Wings PP can be largely attributed to the coaching.

Additionally the coaching staff is responsible for motivating the players. Team almost never starts playing on time. Some of the blame trickles back to the coaching staff.

The defensive core is not very good either. Danny DeKeyser is the ?number one? defenseman and even though he?s probably the best defenseman the Red Wings have he is not deserving of that title. Niklas Kronwall is literally on his last leg and should probably retire after the season. Jonathan Ericsson isn?t very consistent
Green is the #1 defenseman on the team NOT De Keyser. Both are prone to terrible turnovers. Ericsson is just awful, it is not about being consistent. He is consistently bad, just look at all the wonderful deflection goals he scored this season.

The goaltending situation is up in the air with Mrazek, Howard and Coreau all in the mix. Trading Howard or Mrazek would be difficult since both of them haven?t been outstanding this year and few teams are looking for starting goaltending.
Howard has been AMAZING this season! Not a fan of Howard, but he has been solid in net when he hasn't been injured.

93.4 Save % and 1.96 GAA are unsustainable good numbers.

Mrazek is hit or miss. Plays best when being extremely aggressive, which makes him easy to beat if your patient or a off a bad rebound. Since he started getting regular starts again he has been relatively solid. Bigger problem is terrible defending and bad turnovers. Ericsson is the biggest hindrance to Mrazek's success. He is a human pylon standing in front of his goalie screening and deflecting shots into his own net.

They need to give young guys their shots. Ken Holland needs to stop being so loyal to a fault to his players. (i.e. Justin Abdelkader, Darren Helm and Luke Glendening) The problem isn?t the coaching staff; it?s the roster.

Young players not given enough credit is what I agree most almost with overloyal to players from/near Michigan. That being said, coaching staff determines how much these guys play.
For example, Glendening and Sheahan (the purple teletubby) both average more ice-time than Athanasiou.

Only Ott, Miller, and Jurco average less ice-time per game. Or take for example, the constant scratching of Jurco a player with offensive upside. Jurco hasn't been given much opportunity by the Wings, there is no wonder he asked for a trade. As I said previously, odds are he will return to Slovakia to play in the KHL next season.

For example, since coming back from injury Abdelkader has been split from Zetterberg's line. Strange that Z's offensive numbers started picking back up. :hmm:

Another perfect example of Blashill coaching. During previous playoffs, AA would sometimes great some offense out of nowhere with his speed. AA would be rewarded by being benched most of the 3rd periods. Even this season AA is averaging just 13:10 a game, imagine, what he could do with 16-18? He currently has the 4th highest PTS production/60 minutes. Only Vanek, Mantha, and Zetterberg are above him.
