The NHL draft Lottery is a joke

For someone who claimed not be whining, he sure did sound like he was whining.

Wah wah, a different team won the draft. Get over it. Especially him bitching about Chicago. Before they got hot at the end of the January they were below the Wings in the standings. During that 21 game stretch they only lost 6 times.

If he was serious, he would suggest an alternative. He did not, hence he is just whining Detroit didn't win lottery.

True but he does bring up one good point about 'you shouldn't be able to grab the top pick quite so often.' Unless you are the absolute worse team. And when they changed the odds this was bound to happen. I think there's some ways to improve on the draft.

Sure, lottery all 31 picks. Everyone same odds.

Or if you really really suck 50% odds and if you only suck 25% and if you're just plain bad 15% and so forth. When 6 of the last 11 drafts the top (worst) team doesn't pick one, this year 4th -- it's clearly not working.

Last team picking 4th is exactly the idea. The odds of place place team picking 4th is about 50%, that is by design.

The fans of shit teams still have the wrong attitude about the lottery draft.

Being in last place entitles you to 4th spot.
2nd to 5th.
3rd to 6th.
4th to 7th.

The goal is to de-incentivize tanking. While it fails at preventing it, the lottery does help de-incentive it. Recall just how pissed the Buffalo GM was his team got the 2nd pick that got them Eichel.

The first 3 picks are lottery picks you don't magically hold claim to it because of your standing position. Should luck (bribes/politics) get you a top 3 pick, think of it as a bonus.

Teams with the most top 10 picks from 2010-2018

Edmonton - 8
Buffalo - 6
Colorado - 5
Carolina - 5
Vancouver - 5
Florida - 5

I should note Vancouver is only team that didn't draft in the top 2. Their highest position from the 5 picks was 5th.

Of these only Colorado and Carolina made the playoffs, both were wildcard seeds.

If memory serves correct, last time any of these teams even had a decent playoff run was Vancouver when they lost in the finals. Perhaps this will change in the near future, however, this is where things stand.

Pretty much it. Edmonton, stinks. Buffalo, stinks. Vancouver, stinks. The rest of maybe decent.

Florida became a playoff team with Gallant as coach and Tallon as GM. Than the owners got involved. Tallon was 'promoted' out of the GM position and Gallant was unceremoniously fired.

Their mismanagement inclued dumping 3 of their top 6 forwards in a single summer. 2 of em still play on top 6 on Gallant's new team.
