Tigers vs Guardians Game 162 October 1 2023

FIVE FOR FRIDAY.

Baseball changes all the time. Big changes happen approximately every 10 years.

Changes in how it?s played. How wins are leveraged. How players are evaluated and valued.

How GMs assemble rosters. How skippers manage.

And how fans need to think about the game.

Yes, we also need to adapt and get up to speed.

There?s nothing worse than watching today?s game while still using the stats we grew up with and then puzzled over why a certain move was made.

Or wondering why Scott Harris non-tendered certain players last winter. If we looked closely, and used the stats that Front Offices use, we?d understand why they are no longer with the team.

Baseball has turned into an increasingly complicated game and as such, the past 20+ years have introduced formulas that are much more accurate and aren?t influenced by lineup factors or tell limited stories. They simply reveal a better and more complete story about a player.

It?s the New Year and there?s no better time than to update and use the stats crucial to correctly evaluating players. Today, we?re going to focus on the 5 most important stats for positional players.

With the retirement of Miguel Cabrera, baseball is about to enter an historically rare stretch here, folks.

Going into 2024, the active leaders in hits, home runs, and wins, are, respectively:

? Joey Votto, 2135 hits (free agent)
? Giancarlo Stanton, 402 HR (NYY)
? Justin Verlander, 257 wins (HOU)

This means that the entire 2024 season will certainly be played without any members of the 3000-hit, 500-homer, or 300-win clubs appearing on an MLB roster.

The last time an entire MLB season was played without any active members of the 3000-hit, 500-homer, or 300-win clubs was 1977.

The last time before that was 1948. Wowch.

Meanwhile, this looks like a streak that could continue well beyond 2024 in MLB, as the classic HOF counting thresholds of 3000/500/300 become more and more elusive.

The Detroit Tigers have been among the 2 most active teams in the AL Central since the end of the 2023 season. They've added a number of players and payroll unlike......

The Twins and Guardians who are both cutting their payrolls. The Guardians have also lost their long-time manager Tito Francona. The White Sox remain troubled within ownership and Front Office.

The Royals have added $150 mill in payroll and believe the AL Central is for the taking. The only problem is that they finished last in the division last year w/.346 winning percentage. Their last season above .500 was in 2015.

The Detroit Tigers finished the 2023 season in 2nd place. Their best record since 2016. However, they ended up 6 games under .500.

In 2022, they finished in 4th place, 30 games under .500 with 96 losses.

At quick glance, they appear to be performing better and more consistently. There have been some discussions that they could vie for the AL Central title next year given that this division is historically the weakest in MLB.

Outside of that rationale, are there other reasons to believe that the AL Central is theirs for the taking?

I?ve got 5 factors to consider???
