High school football: Playoff capsules
When high school football playoffs start around the state on Friday night, 20 teams from the mid-Michigan area will fight to continue their seasons for at least another week.

Some area winners will knock out another local team as they prolong their season, with five first-round matchups on Friday featuring area teams head-to-head.

Lansing Catholic, which finished undefeated for the second straight regular season and is ranked No. 1 in Division 5 heading in to the state playoffs, will host Olivet in the first round after the Eagles reached the Division 5 state finals last season.

"I think we've got a tough draw," Cougars coach Jim Ahern said. "Olivet's a very good football team. They present a lot of problems defensively, and you have to make a lot of adjustments. ...

"They've got a lot of kids back from that (2010) team, so that experience really helps them."

Experience may help the Eagles, but they will need more than that trying to stop a Lansing Catholic offense that has put up at least 42 points in its last six games.

The Cougars also will be motivated after finishing off a perfect regular season in 2010 before getting dominated in a 58-24 loss to Williamston in the opening round of the playoffs.

After Olivet, Lansing Catholic could face a CAAC White rematch with Portland, which hosts Ovid-Elsie in the other district semifinal Friday.

The Cougars defeated the Raiders, 42-24, on Oct. 7, and the two teams had scrimmaged each other prior to the season.

In Division 3, another all-area pod will feature DeWitt against Haslett in one district semifinal and St. Johns against East Lansing in the other.

Haslett managed to squeeze into the playoffs and take advantage of an unusual amount of nonautomatic qualifier spots.

Only 234 teams reached six wins - or five wins for eight-game schedules. That left 22 at-large spots for teams across the eight MHSAA divisions to reach the final number of 256 schools.

After a 1-3 start, the Vikings managed to receive one of those slots despite a 5-4 record, thanks to an important win over Chelsea on Friday night.

We knew going against Chelsea if we could get them, we could get a ton of (MHSAA playoff) points and that would definitely put us in the playoffs," Haslett coach Charlie Otlewski said.

Now that they're in, the Vikings want to be tough to get out.

"I think right now, we're a very confident team. Our kids have really been on a roll the last 5 1/2 or six weeks," Otlewski said. "Of any team that we've taken to the playoffs, we feel like this team deserved to go to the postseason. We just wanted an opportunity."

Holt, one of four CAAC Blue co-champions, also reached the playoffs with a 5-4 record.

Fulton did the same and achieved the feat for the second straight year - a tribute to the strength of the CMAC. The Pirates will be a part of the fifth matchup between two area teams in the first round, when they travel to play at Fowler in Division 8.

The first game this season between the two CMAC rivals helped turn around the Eagles' season. Fowler, which entered that game with a 1-2 record, scored a 14-7 win at home and eventually finishedwith six straight victories.

Fowler finished behind Saranac and Pewamo-Westphalia in the CMAC standings. The Redskins (8-1) and Pirates (9-0) could meet in a Division 7 district final if both teams get past their first-round home games.

Defending Division 6 state champion Ithaca (9-0), winner of 23 straight games, will open up at home against Byron.

Other area playoff qualifiers include: Grand Ledge (7-2), Okemos (6-3), Mason (8-1), Sexton (6-3), Alma (7-2) and Leslie (7-2).

Eleven area high school football teams enter postseason
Tom Kendra | The Muskegon Chronicle, October 24, 2011 12:40 a.m.

West Michigan Conference football enjoys a favorable reputation around the state.

It comes from playoff tradition and the many state championship trophies on display at conference schools.

"I've said it since Week 1, we are the OK Red of small schools," Whitehall coach Cliff Sandee said. "The proof is in the pudding. We have three in the same region and all three are good enough to play in the state championship game."

Five WMC schools (Oakridge, Shelby, Montague, Whitehall and Ravenna) represent nearly half of the Muskegon area's 11 playoff qualifiers this season. The other participants are Grand Haven, Muskegon, Fruitport, Spring Lake, Ludington and Muskegon Catholic.

The 256-team playoff field was announced Sunday night by the Michigan High School Athletic Association. Pre-game districts will be played this weekend, followed by four more games to determine the state champions on Nov. 25-26 at Detroit's Ford Field.

"We're excited we get to play another week of football," Muskegon coach Shane Fairfield said. "It's one week at a time and the first one to five wins. This is why we do the things we do all season to put ourselves in this position."

Oakridge and Montague are in the same district and may play a rematch in Week 2; while Shelby, which tied Oakridge for the WMC title, is in a different region as its WMC foes.

Ravenna made the Division 7 playoffs as an at-large team at 5-4.

In Division 8, top-ranked Muskegon Catholic and No. 2 Mendon were placed in the same district and likely will meet in Week 2.

"I'd say that I classify our district as very tough," MCC coach Mike Holmes said about the district that also includes defending state runner-up Saugatuck and St. Joseph Lake Michigan Catholic.

Here's a look at the first-round matchups involving area teams.

Grand Ledge (7-2) at Grand Haven (8-1)

The Buccaneers defeated the Comets in the 2009 playoff opener. Haven is the No. 2 seed and Grand Ledge is No. 3. Top-seeded Rockford faces No. 4 West Ottawa in the other pre-district game.

"We are really looking forward to Grand Ledge coming here again," said Haven coach Mike Farley, whose team finished second behind Rockford in the OK Red. "They go to the playoffs every year and they are one of the best teams in mid-Michigan."

The Bucs are riding high from a big Seniors Night win over West Ottawa on Friday night. They may have a shot to avenge their lone loss to Rockford in the district title game.

Muskegon (7-2) at Mattawan (8-1)

Muskegon, which lost to Rockford and Grand Haven and finished third in the OK Red, will hit the road to face a new playoff opponent. The Wildcats play in the Southwestern Michigan Conference.

Fairfield doesn't know much about Mattawan, which has allowed only 136 points (15.1) and lost its lone game to Sturgis (25-16) in Week 2.

"This is somebody new," Fairfield said. "It adds to the mystery. They have four days to prepare for us and we have four days to prepare for them."

The winner will advance to the district title game against the Forest Hills Central-Lowell victor.

Fruitport (7-2) at East Grand Rapids (6-3)

The Pioneers have won the last five Division 3 state championships, but have lost three games this season to Holland (30-22), Lowell (23-14) and Grand Rapids Christian (50-49 in two OTs).

Fruitport coach Steve Wilson is hoping the Trojans also can surprise the state powerhouse. Fruitport won at East Grand Rapids in 2001 en route to a state runner-up finish.

"East is a beatable team, but we have to play good football," said Wilson, whose team missed getting home field against East by a single playoff point. "At least they are not undefeated this season. They are proving that they are human."

Fruitport is coming off a tough 28-6 loss to DeWitt, but Wilson thinks it was a good tuneup for this week's game.

Kenowa Hills and GR Christian meet in the other pre-district game.

Whitehall (6-3) at Sparta (7-2)

The Vikings are as healthy as they've been all season heading to Sparta.

It's been five years since Whitehall has played in the postseason.

"It's pretty exciting," said Sandee, Whitehall's first-year coach. "We've been preaching all season that it's a bonus to make it to the second season. We want to extend it as much as possible and have some fun."

Sparta has suffered its two losses to GR West Catholic (42-2) and Comstock Park (45-7).

Spring Lake and Comstock Park will play the other pre-district game.

Spring Lake (6-3) at Comstock Park (7-2)

The Lakers will prepare for a big team that runs an effective spread offense.

The Panthers suffered their losses to West Catholic (42-35) and Coopersville (14-13). Spring Lake fell to Coopersville on Friday night 49-35.

"We've done so much different this season for us to try to get through the first round," said Spring Lake coach Jerry Rabideau, whose team tied Fruitport for the Lakes 8 title. "Maybe Comstock Park is a team we can match up with."

Whitehall and Sparta will meet in the other pre-district game.

Ludington (6-3) at Escanaba (6-3)

The Orioles will have to make a long trip to the Upper Peninsula for their first taste of the playoffs since 1999.

Ludington earned its way to the postseason by winning its last five games.

"Our playoffs started in Week 5," said Ludington coach Charlie Gunsell, whose team ended the year with three straight shutouts. "We've been in playoff mode for awhile."

The game will match two talented dual-threat quarterbacks

This time we'll have to wait a week before a possible Farmington Hills Harrison vs. Birmingham Brother Rice showdown in the playoffs.
The Michigan High School Athletic Association announced the official pairings for the eight-division, 256-team state playoffs on Sunday and Harrison (9-0), ranked No. 1 all season, will host Birmingham Seaholm (6-3) in a Division 2 predistrict likely on 7 p.m. Friday. The official time and dates for all 128 first round games will be announced today.
Brother Rice (5-4), which made the playoffs for the 13th consecutive season, was one of 20 teams that made the playoffs as an additional qualifier. Brother Rice opens at North Farmington (7-2).
Last season Harrison defeated Brother Rice in the first round, 37-27. Brother Rice led 27-22 and had possession until a fumble late in the game turned it around.
"That's a good thing," Harrison coach John Herrington said about not having to play Brother Rice this week. "We didn't figure on Seaholm. We didn't have them in the picture. Oh well. Now we'll go to work preparing for them."
Harrison won its 13th state title last season; Brother Rice has won six titles.
Plymouth vs. Canton rematch comes early
Last season Plymouth upset Canton 17-7 in a Division 1 district final. This season these rivals will play on Friday in a predistrict.
On Oct. 7 Plymouth (8-1) came from nine points down in the final minute to pull out a 31-30 victory.
"Hey, it's the playoffs," Plymouth coach Mike Sawchuck said. "You have to play who you have to play. I thought we might play Livonia Churchill. I thought (Ann Arbor Pioneer) would be in our district, too. We knew they would put Canton in the same district."
The other bracket has Northville (8-1) playing at Detroit Catholic Central (8-1). The winners will play for the district title the following week.
This might be the most competitive district in this division. C.C. is ranked No. 7, Plymouth is No. 10, Northville is No. 11 and Canton (7-2) is No. 12.
Last season Canton defeated Plymouth 36-0 then lost in the playoffs. Plymouth continued on to the final, where it lost to Lake Orion, 21-13, at Ford Field.
"It's amazing how things change," Canton coach Tim Baechler said. "In the past when Pioneer or Monroe made the playoffs they would be in our district."
Baechler said the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association is considering a proposal that would seed each team according to playoff points. The current system seeds teams in each district, not statewide or even in a region, as many coaches would prefer.
Catching a break
Churchill (6-3) made the playoffs on the final weekend as it defeated Livonia Stevenson 56-13. Not only does Churchill bypass Plymouth and Canton
