3yr old Blows Mom's Head Off

hey, a gun in the house is only 43 times more likely to kill yourself or a family member than it is to kill an intruder, those are good odds, right?

Good thing the GOP blocked a candidate for Surgeon General because he said that guns were a threat to public health

just ask ted cruz

Depends. How likely are you to kill yourself or an intruder? The 43x isn't significant without context but why let the facts get in the way of a good anti-gun rant?

Of course this tragic death occurred with a handgun and other than expanded background checks nobody has been saying anything about handguns in the recent gun control debates. So unless your gun control agenda is different from what's been proposed - like you're for gun confiscation, neither gun control as proposed nor the surgeon general wouldn't have stopped this from happening. And let's not forget there are a number of pro-gun democrats or the fact that the electorate ranks gun control extremely low on the list of issues they care about so your gratuitous and predictable GOP bashing is also unfounded.

does it make sense to block a nominee for surgeon general because he thinks that guns pose a risk to public health?

It makes more sense than blaming this death on the GOP for blocking a candidate for Surgeon General.

never blamed it on the GOP, just pointing out how stupid Cruz was for saying that. Of course that wasn't the main reason they blocked him, he founded Doctors for America which is a pro ACA group but they do consider gun violence a public health problem.

As for gun ownership and laws, I look at owning a gun a lot like riding a motorcycle without a helmet, I think it's dumb and it's a risk to your own life but it doesn't really affect me. If you want to do something stupid and put yourself at risk, be my guest, but it's not happening in my house.

I am in favor of background checks, not allowing armor piercing ammunition, no gun show loopholes, and magazine size limits but of course it will never happen. I'm sure all of those changes would be popular with the majority of americans but the GOP would lose support in their base and the Democrats are pussies on the issue.

we need to stop labelling situations of negligence as "accidents". it isn't an accident, it is stupidity.

who leaves a loaded gun under the couch? this is NOT responsible gun ownership...and Thumb was absolutely correct...DARWIN

feel terrible for the child, but if the parents were this irresponsible, maybe it is for the best he gets placed in the care of another relative. chances are good the father was the one responsible for leaving the gun like that, and if so he does not deserve to remain a responsible party for the children.

Clearly, you're insinuating that every gun tragedy in America is at least partially the fault of the "right wing gun nuts in the GOP" who block gun control that wouldn't stop any of these tragedies or the real problem of urban gun violence from happening. Any attempt to deny that is absurd. And what did Ted Cruz say? I'm not familiar and you didn't post the quote so even if you were just saying Ted Cruz was stupid for what he said, that's not at all clear in your post.

Look, of course we should have a surgeon general in place," Cruz, R-Texas, said on CNN?s State of the Union Oct. 19. "And we don?t have one because President Obama, instead of nominating a health professional, he nominated someone who is an anti-gun activist."

Murthy graduated from the Yale school of medicine and practiced and taught at Harvard's brigham and women's hospital. Saying that he's not a medical professional is pretty disingenuous.

I said that i'd be in favor of

background checks for all gun sales

no armor piercing ammunition

no magazines larger than 10 bullets

If it's not the crazy right wingers and spineless democrats, why don't we have this legislation? these regulations are all overwhelmingly popular with the American people.

Why is this legislation blocked? the 2013 gun control bill was completely watered down and still blocked in the senate.

Yep. Under a fuckin' couch. You can't take the time to lock it up high, not open on the fuckin' ground.

You're taking that a bit too literally. Clearly the point he's making is that although he may be a doctor, when he says stupid things like "guns are a national health issue" clearly there are concerns that he will politicize a cabinet position that should be apolitical.

But you never mention the spineless democrats. With you, it's always the right wing nut jobs that are at fault every time there is a tragedy involving firearms. But really, it's neither - America doesn't really care about gun control. It never polls as a significant issue in any election. That's the simple truth of it. And the 2013 bills were not watered down - if it was just expanded background checks and maybe 1 or 2 smaller items, they may have gotten something passed but in virtually every case they threw in a bunch of other crap like gun registries that made them impossible to pass.

No such thing. Never has been such a thing, and likely never will be such a thing.

I think there's truth to that. When I see the things American find significant, top 3, 4 or 5..Gun Control is never one.

Of course not, that's because we are a nation of gun lovers.

And not many of those people can put 2 + 2 together and understand why we have more gun violence per year than almost every other country combined.

Yet people like the NRA keep on insisting that guns prevent more crimes than they cause.

I call dems out all the time, I said that they were total pussies on this issue.

Also, even if an issue isn't one of the top 3 or 5 concerns for the public doesn't mean that we can't move on legislation that makes sense.
