It's true! Ángel Hernández is retiring! The worst umpire in the last 30 years is retiring. All that is left is to get CB Bucknor to retire as well.

Angel Hernandez retires:

Umpire Angel Hernandez, a controversial figure in Major League Baseball for more than 30 years, is hanging up his hat. He issued a statement via MLB on Monday evening confirming his decision. Hernandez said umpiring in the majors was a “childhood dream” come true, but cited spending “more time with my family” as the primary reason for his retirement. However, Jeff Passan of ESPN reports that Hernandez “reached a settlement to leave Major League Baseball,” effective immediately. Bob Nightengale of USA Today adds that the sides had “spent the past two weeks negotiating a financial settlement before reaching a resolution over the weekend.”

Hernandez was one of the most senior umpires in the league, but he has long had a reputation for making incorrect calls and unnecessary ejections. In recent years, he has been in and out of the headlines as he attempted to sue Major League Baseball for racial discrimination. He ultimately lost the suit and his subsequent appeal.

More on Hernandez and his retirement will likely trickle out in the coming days, such as statements from his fellow umpires and the commissioner’s office, and perhaps more news about the terms of his settlement.

The agony that is Angel Hernandez’s umpiring has finally come to a close, so what better time to remember his legacy than right now. Some of Angel Hernandez’s worst calls and most iconic moments, a thread.

1) A bad Angel Hernandez call induces one of the greatest outbursts of emotion on a baseball field of all-time from Kyle Schwarber.

2) Wyatt Langford is thrown 3 balls that are 17 feet away from the plate. All 3 of them are called strikes.

3) Blue Jays pitcher Bowden Francis blatantly steps off the mound before throwing a pitch. Angel Hernandez does not care, allows Francis to throw the pitch, and then calls a ball well above the zone a strike.

4) Angel ejects Bryce Harper after making one of the most egregious called check swings ever.

5) Angel completely blows a call at 1st base that would’ve given the White Sox the win and announcer Hawk Harrelson loses it.

6) Angel Hernandez ejects Ian Kinsler for simply looking at him.

7) Former Chicago Bear Steve McMichael gets the entire stadium to boo Angel right before hes about to sing Take Me Out to the Ball Game.

8) Angel puts together the least accurate single game performance by an umpire of the last 5 years.

9) Angel makes what is often referred to as his single worst called strike of all-time to Erick Aybar in the WBC.

Here are some more Angel moments that might not be as iconic as the previous ones but are still hilarious.

Masahiro Tanaka throws a pitch directly down the middle. In Angel Hernandez’s world this is referred to as a ball.

A pitch at the ankles on a 3-2 count with the bases loaded on the other hand? THAT is a strike.

In 2018 ALDS Game 3, Angel Hernandez had THREE (!!!) of his calls overturned by replay within the first 4 innings of the game.

Angel isn’t just soft in regular season games, he can pull this off in Spring Training too! Here he is ejecting Lance Lynn from his Spring training start, then ejecting him again when he tried to throw in the bullpen.

Angel decided one day that he wanted to outdo his Harper check swing call, so he called a strike on Spencer Torkleson on a swing where the knob of the bat was parallel to the pitcher.

Adam Rosales hits what should’ve been a game-tying Home Run with 2 outs in the 9th but it’s called a double. They then go to review it on replay, and Angel Hernandez still decides that this was not a Home Run.
Fun fact on this play, Angel Hernandez is so stubborn that for years he refused to admit he was wrong on it and it’s part of the reason why he wasn’t given important postseason games.
