Avril Franchised

Mitch[/color]]Better than a franchise and then he walks next year.
Tag him again.

Mayhew probably thinks Avril will cave and take a lesser deal rather than play with no long-term security again.

I wouldn't be surprised if some team offered a first.

they cant afford the 10.6 this year..lol

as of now they have 4 guys taking up half the teams cap.

ya, that number can't work

Avril and his agent know the Lions cap situation...they know 10.6 is not a workable number for him...it's why MM wanted to avoid the tag.

Avril has the leverage now.

idk....I'd let him walk before I pay him $10.6

I'd be fk'n stoked if we traded Avril for picks. Completely stoked.

to good to be true....nothing that good ever happens to this team.

MM probably will overpay him to keep him longterm...thats how the Lions roll.

id say no trade for cliff happens. But i can see a 6 year 50 million deal. then a CJ restructure, and a tulloch 4 year deal for 30m

What? Avril has no leverage. The guy wants $12 million a year. Even if its backloaded, how much do you think they'll save from the $10.6? If its a huge saving, how is that different than restructuring someone else's deal? Its just pushing money into the future.

For example, consider these two options:
Avril signs for $12 million per year, but the first year hit is only $4. That means $8 million is pushed into the future. The Lions will pay him $14 million per year for four years.
Also, Stafford makes $10.6 million in salary this year. Combine those, and you get $14.6 million hit this year, with $8 million of Avril pushed into the future.

Or, take Stafford's $10.6 million, move it to a signing bonus so that they save about $7 million, although that gets moved into the future. Avril has no leverage. Maybe you get him to sign for $10 million a year, and you don't backload it. Combine that $10 million with Stafford's $3.6 million hit, and you pretty much get the same thing: $13.6 million this year, $7 million pushed into future years.

Either way, they're just moving money into the future. The difference? Mayhew saves $10 million on Avril's deal by not overpaying.

Mayhew still has the leverage.

whatever you say dude...obviously you have a pipeline into the financials.

Mayhew himself said he wanted to AVOID the tag because it handcuffs them to a player making a LARGE guaranteed salary...

you can't keep moving money around , you eventually have to pay it out , ask the Raiders.

Avril as of now is guaranteed 10.6 million dollars as soon as he signs the tender...if he does....he knows and his agent knows it is in the Lions best interest to long term him at a cap friendly number.

but keep telling me he has No leverage...it's kind of funny when the GM himself dredded tagging him.

If he didn't gain leverage by tagging Avril, he would've just given him the money now. If he loses leverage to Cliff, why delay the inevitable? Just go ahead and pay him now.

"you can't keep moving money around , you eventually have to pay it out , ask the Raiders."
You missed the whole point. If they sign Cliff to a cap-friendly deal, its STILL MOVING MONEY INTO THE FUTURE. What you're saying is that Mayhew will panic and overpay a guy, then push most of his salary into future years just to save a few million this year. But pushing someone else's money into the future to save the same few million and gain the leverage back from Avril is unreasonable.

Explain to me how moving Cliff's salary into future years is any different than someone currently on the roster, like Suh or Stafford.

buddy what don't you get ?

he franchised him.....he didn't want to...he said it's not a good option for them , Avril must not of liked what he was offered and turned it down....thus making the Lions do something they didnt want to do TAG HIM....so tell me who has the leverage ?

if the Lions wanted to maintain control they would have Exclusive Rights him....they didn't , he is now free to shop himself March 13th....something Avril wanted all along and the Lions didnt'

Tagging him is not good option. Sure. But overpaying and pushing most of it into the future is better? Explain how.

I could careless about the future....he's tagged...lol....he counts for 10.6 million on the 2012 cap as soon as he signs it....that in itself is a stupid number , it's why they didnt want to tag him.

MM knows they'll have a hard time signing the rest of their own guys with Avril now tagged....Avril now has him over a barrell , thats the part you don't get.

with Cliff tagged , Tulloch is most likely gone....MM was hoping Avril would cave and not wanna take a chance on playing on the tag...Cliff and his agent didn't bite.
