If Sidney Crosby hasn't played in almost year, Why should we assume Jahvid Best will be back this year? Maybe not next year?

I don't see him coming back. They did the same thing with Stafford and put it off a few weeks before making it official. I wouldn't be surprised if Jahvid was the same way...... Our own Brian Westbrook?

Yeah, unfortunately, Best probably doesn't have the head to play in the NFL. Concussions are a serious thing. If he does come back they need to really limit the types of plays he gets, he cannot take a pounding, it's too risky.

Because Crosby is a cry baby little bitch. Oops I said that out loud didnt I :) I would be shocked with Best plays before our game @Oak if at all. I am very worried about the futures of him and Mikel.

My guess is Best retires within a year or 2. He's a bandaid. He was a bandaid in college and his NFL career has got off to a horrific start.

As for Leshoure. His injury is at least a 2 year injury. Sure, he'll play next year but he won't be the same type of runner. I hope he proves me wrong but i have my doubts.

On Leshoure; and beware, this article is extremely long winded, but it's good info apparently:

http://www.lowerextremityreview.com/article/return-to-football-after-achilles-tendon-rupture

Keynote:
During the 2008-2009 NFL season, six players suffered season-ending Achilles tendon ruptures. Although the incidence of Achilles rupture is low, 0.93% per NFL game, nearly 36% of affected players never return to playing at the NFL level

Of the 31 players who sustained an Achilles tendon rupture, 21 (64%) returned to play in the NFL at an average of 11 months after injury. In the three seasons following their return, those 21 players saw significant decreases in games played and power ratings compared to the three seasons preceding the injury

Even if Leshoure came back to play at 80% of his potential it would still probably significantly improve our power running game...

I think the most telling statistic in there is that 21/31 came back - that means 10 players never returned to the NFL... but of those 21, all 21 players had significant output reduction for 3 years.

Frightening.

Yeah and whats the number of those injuries this year up to? Last I knew Shefter said 34 but that was two weeks ago

I know ex-Wolverine Leon Hall just got one last week I think? Shawne Merriman, Bryan Thomas, Jeff Cumberland, Earnest Graham...

For all you know Leshoure isn't even a top 20 NFL back healthy, so 80% of him significantly improving anything isn't a great prediction.

80% of most of the NFL's good backs wouldn't be enough. The NFL is an animal.

This is the website of the guy Crosby went to for his head.

http://www.carrickinstitute.org/

A guy that works for me went to Chiropractic school down by his office and says Dr Carrick does wacky adjustments and is out there, but apparently gets good results and has a 3 year wait list.

Maybe the Lions should send Best there.

IF Kevin Smith plays like he did against Carolina, Best is sitting the whole year for sure. I have my doubts he does(Smith)

What type of play do you suggest?? What is a "safe" NFL play for a running back?

You can limit touches....sure....but you can't dictate the type of hits he takes by using different plays. Do you want him to slide down before contact? Run out of bounds every play? The only option where I can see a skill player have very limited chance of getting hurt is puting him as an outside receiver and telling him to go long EVERY play. Is that what you're suggesting they do?

You've never played football have you?

You don't have to be a tough guy and hit someone. Run out of bounds, go down if you're being tackled instead of having another guy slam into you. Don't run between the tackles. There are other options.

They're options....but horrible ones. He's an NFL running back. Are you seriously suggesting that he "go down" when being tackled??

Don't run between the tackles?? No opposing coaches would pick up on that would they??

Look, I wan't JB to be healthy and have a good, long career in Detroit. He's explosive and can be used in a lot of ways to help this offense. That said, he plays a tough position in a tough sport. If he can't take the hits, he's gotta go. Trying to limit his hits by only using him on certain plays isn't the answer. Neither is going down easy or just running outside the tackles.

I get both you points. Best may have been better as a Sproles/Bush type which would have limited his wear and tear. Unfortunately we didn't have that option and he was used more heavily in all facets of the run game. To the other point, regardless of how he was used there it is almost impossible for a RB not to take big hits. Even those guys I mentioned get/got cold cocked sometimes. If Best can't take those types of hits, unfortunately that might be it for him.

Hopefully he is like Crosby sit out for a while (hopefully not a year) and come back as good as ever right off the bat.

+1

And lets not pretend that Best has been a workhorse either. He only averaged 14 touches/game last year and 18 this year. He has had problems with staying healthy with those numbers. What would we have to limit him to.....8.....10? On that pace he would last 10, maybe 11 games.

Only sweeps and long balls though.
