Big Lebowski at 20

Oh man... I remember Grandpa MichChamp taking my brother and I to see it in the theatre, SOLELY on account of the title.

He's 100% Polish American...

The conversation went kinda like this:
Grandpa: "The Big Lebowski... what a great name. We're going to see that."

Me: "I dunno..."
Brother: "What's it about?"

Grandpa: "I repeat: The Big Lebowski... what a great name. We're going to see that."

afterwards he was less than thrilled... "What the hell was that even about? guy was a bum. He didn't accomplish anything!"

Meanwhile... my brother and I sat there stunned, & amazed by what we had just seen, not aware movies that great were possible.

Sometimes in interviews, you can't help but see The Dude.

?Someone asked me, ?How would you feel at the end of your career if the role you were most famous for was The Dude?? ?I?d be fucking delighted,? I told him.?

The Dude abided.

That was his accomplishment.

Abiding was the thing that the Dude did.

The Dude abided better than anybody had ever abided before.

I have never seen the entire movie...just parts here and there.

Ha, I've probably watched it dozens of times. Dozens more in college where I started watching it, and passed out.

You really owe it to yourself to make a white russian, sit down and watch.

I remember after I saw it, telling all my friends they needed to watch it, and everyone being like "Yeah, yeah, whatever."

Then my sophomore year of college (2000) it started to take off. Every house of guys I knew on campus got copy and would watch together. I had a bunch of friends call me and say "Hey, I finally watched it. You were right!"

Then I noticed a lot of people would quote lines from movie to me, but get them wrong, and I started wishing I never told anyone to see it.

So if you do watch it, don't come here and start quoting lines from the movie incorrectly.

It probably was his best role; John Goodman's too. and geez, just about everyone in the movie.

I've always wanted to go to one of the Lebowski Fests, but they required travel. The one time one was in Chicago, I was out of town. Sometimes actual members of the cast show up.

That's just like, what you think, man.

"Far out."

I've never watched the Big Lebowski either, likely b/c there were so many in my parochial grade-school and ethnically-mixed NE Detroit hood with surnames ending in "ski" ...including my next-door neighbors. I didn't get along very well with one of their daughters who was a year and a half older, and told her once that I would never date or esp marry a girl who was all or part Polish...but did the latter anyway.

I owned a sweater similar to that worn by Jeff Bridges in the movie....almost 25 years earlier when it was still in style...along with big bell blue jeans, army/bomber jackets, platform shoes, long-sleeve nylon shirts, and using a metal flour-sifter to clean the stems and seeds out of "lids" of crappy Mexican marijuana.

you really need to just watch this goddamn great movie.

if you hate it, fine, don't ever trust me again. but I don't really think that's a possibility.
