Can the White House revoke a press pass?

In another thread, I said it wasn't a big deal with regard to Acosta because I do think he goes beyond just reporting and it's not like there's a shortage of reporters in the world. But that was a knee jerk reaction. I searched to figure out how often this kind of thing happens, and apparently, it doesn't.

I found this article from 2010 that asserts the White House probably doesn't have the power to do it, but doesn't really explain why: https://foreignpolicy.com/2010/06/07/can-the-white-house-revoke-a-reporters-credentials/

CNN is suing and has the lawyer Bush hired in Bush v Gore.

While the pass hasn't been revoked before, organizations have been banned for periods of time: https://www.abc10.com/article/news/...ia-outlets-from-the-white-house/103-414543179

So maybe Trump gives Acosta his pass back, and then bans him for the remainer of his Presidency.

There has to be extenuating circumstances. Not sure this fits that but for example if you threaten a President I suspect one could lose his press pass..

seems odd. his right to free speech is one thing, but his right to a white house press pass seems tougher to defend. the guy can still publish anything he wants about the President. Seems to me the pass is more of a privilege, the idea that's it's an inalienable right with no expiration seems pretty dumb.

That's the example in that 2nd link.

But I bet you didn’t know that Abraham Zapruder caught the discussion between Nixon and Ron Zigler on film, did you?

In the film The Post, Spielberg makes it look as if the banning had to do with the publication of the Pentagon Papers.

Did a little research, and according to this, the conversation actually happened closer to the timing of the breaking of early Watergate scoops.

Also, I was kidding about the clip being another Zapruder film, in case you didn’t figure that out.

Zapruder could not have made that film.

Because at the time of the conversation, he would have been already dead.

I think Trump is an asshole as much as the next person, but he is the president and add a press conference he is due the same courtesy as any president.

It seems to me from what I?ve seen Acosta goes out of his way to be disruptive and it?s his primary purpose rather than asking questions and getting a news story.

If the White House can ban a reporter because they view a security risk I think the White House has a right to ban a reporter who is continuously disruptive-not to mention being discourteous to other reporters there by hogging the microphone, reporters who are there to do the same job that Acosta is there for.

In the first link Gulo posted there are examples of exactly that-reporters viewed as a security risks.

I agree with all of this.

To me, this is not a real controversy - the idea that revoking a press pass or banning a reporter for doing what Acosta does is a threat to the freedom of the press seems just a tad exaggerated.

The guy is a complete schmuck but I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him win a Pulitzer or some other formerly prestigious journalism award for this.

I googled a couple terms and found nothing, didn't know what The Post was, and assumed it was an older movie since it had Zapruder contributing to the filming. Since I found nothing on google, I assumed it was some sort of insider knowledge you picked up when you met the right person walking dogs.

edit: I also thought it must happen pretty rarely if the 1 example in the article is the one that comes to mind of the only person that's thinking of an example.

If the Big Tech Chicoms can ban Republicans the POTUS can ban CNN, in the end everybody gets banned and DetroitSpotsForum becomes the last internet ghetto where people can cuss and stuff.

The Post came out just last year.

I didn?t learn about it when walking my dogs, but an acquaintance of mine from a dog park, Bob Odenkirk, was in it and I think he should?ve been nominated for best supporting actor award.

Abraham said Zapruder died in 1970.

He shot one hit film. You might have seen it:

They pulled press credentials on the West Wing, so it must be permitted. I've stood on the concrete palister where Zapruder had one shot at getting that one shot and he's no more than 60 feet from frame 313.

I noticed Odenkirk was in it when I checked out the wikipedia page. Very convincing actor. I just saw Incredibles 2 and I knew his character was him after a single word.

For some reason, I'd like to see him in a show with Jason Bateman. The idea of Odenkirk pitching an idea that Bateman is skeptical of seems too to not exist.

60 feet from frame 313.

You knowing these numbers makes me feel like there's an entire culture surrounding this film I'm unaware of. I recognized the name from this film, but I've never heard anyone mention frame 313 like that.

Yeah, the frame numbers are in the upper right hand corner of the film as it transpires, Professor.

I am 99% sure your post is a goof-even I figured out what byco meant, and I am hardly the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Did you recognize the character Jackie O? She is the one in the pink suit, and the pink pillbox hat.

Did you recognize President Kennedy? He is the one who had his brains exploded and blasted all over at frame 313.

That is the frame that Zapruder was standing less than 60 feet away from.

It's not a goof-honest mistake. I've seen the film enough times I didn't click it to see there were frame numbers on this one. I read byco's post like he's been talking to people that talk about the details of this film so much or reading so much that frame number is used as a convenient shorthand.

Hmmmm...not convinced.

You?ve been ?playing dumb? ever since you pretended to believe that the clip from the end of The Post, of Nixon on the phone in the Oval Office, was actually filmed in real time by Abraham Zapruder from the White House lawn, while Zapruder was hiding behind the same bushes that Sean Spicer hid behind.
