Caron Butler

Decent 3 shooter, not a huge surprise, contract is rather large for what he brings, however. Would have rather offered a big contract to Trevor Ariza, and then let Monroe go.

Detroit has quite the collection of could-have-been-but-never-were's on their team now: Meeks, Jennings, Augustin, Villaneuva.

Huh?

Meeks was a 2nd round pick, guy put up 15 a game last year.

Augustin put up 13.1 PPG and 4.5 APG. He was arguably one of Chicago's best players.

As much as Jennings irritates me, the dude is 24.

You can't call them could have been but never were. That's not fair at all.

Butler signing only signals that Smith won't be playing any SF next year. Butler doesn't offer much, but he was a very good shooter last year. Off the bench (likely behind Singler) at least gives us another viable shooter on the wings.

Here's the craziest thing. We are spending 6.5 million on Jodie Meeks. We are spending 5 million on Caron Butler. Neither player offers much of anything besides shooting.

OKC just signed Anthony Morrow (career 43% 3 pt shooter) for 3.3 million a year.

I understand that we are a building team while OKC is a contender, but wow. OKC just signed arguably the best shooter on the market for almost 2 million less than we just signed OKC's washed retread.

As much as I like Morrow, he doesn't do anything else besides shoot. Can't create, rebound, defend, drive. He just shoots. I even think 3 M a year for him is too much. But, that's the market today. When we start comparing 5 M to 3 M per year, we are looking for things to argue. It's not a big deal.

Meeks can defend a little bit. He's a much better player overall than Morrow.

just looking at the stats for the Pistons last year. I didn't realize that Josh Smith was the leading scorer for the team last year. Lead the team in minutes and PPG...of course he took the most shots, had the worst 3 pt FG % among the starters, shitty FT shooter. 26% from 3 and took 3.4 a game....53% from the line. He sucks!

He didn't just have the worst 3P%, he set an all-time record in the NBA.

I see the Butler signing as similar to Billups last year, except I believe he has some game left to offer, he shot the ball solidly from 3 last year for MIL/OKC, and he's a respected veteran around the league.

SVG is doing a solid job so far getting shooters here, he's addressing 1 of the biggest weaknesses with the Pistons last year, they were 29th in 3pt. % last year. Floor spacing shouldn't be anywhere near as much of an issue as it was.

The DJ Augstin move is going really far under the radar. That guy can play. I'm excited about him in the Pistons blue.

Meeks is more well rounded than Morrow, sure. But is he twice as valuable? The Butler comparison is the much more damning my opinion. Butler can't do anything more than Morrow at this point in his career. But Morrow is younger and overall the better shooter. Why did we pay so much? Were there REALLY other teams clamoring for Butler's services after he laid an egg in the playoffs?

Yeah, I have no gripe with your beef about Butler. Have never been a big fan of his.

I think when we talk about being "twice as valuable," it's hard to do when you do the cap. Because when you are comparing 3 vs 6 mil, it's not the same as doing 20 mil vs 40 mil. I think so far this signings have been relatively cost-efficient.

We have to be honest, the big name free agents are not coming here until the Pistons start winning some games again. Joe D would have given Meeks a 5 year, 90 m contract. Everything SVG has done is really reasonable, and wouldn't be a big blowback if he had to cut bait with one of these guys down the road.

The new guys are much more reasonable than a Joe D contract, but that's not saying much. I think my problem is that we overpaid but didn't really get any impact players. If we were throwing around cap space to get even Chandler Parsons (a humonguos improvement on the wings), that's one thing. Parson, though not worth the max, does legitimately lockdown the SF position throughout his contract. We overpaid on guys who we may be looking to upgrade as early as next year.

If we weren't going to get first or second tier free agents, I would have rather waited and scooped up the third/fourth tier guys on desperation contracts. Heck, we might have been able to grab Brandon Rush at the minimum, and he is a better player than Meeks when healthy.

Overpaying adds up. Overpay a star by 2 million, and it's one thing. Overpay multiple role players by 2 million each, and you waste more cap.
